Not of This World
But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 3:20)
Introduction
On July 8, 1947, reports emerged that a flying saucer had crash-landed near Roswell, New Mexico—sparking decades of curiosity, conspiracy theories, and a fascination with the idea of visitors from another world. While many question the truth of those events, the Bible is unambiguous about another kind of otherworldly visitation—one that changed history, and one still to come. Today’s verse reminds us that we, too, are strangers in this world, waiting for a Savior who comes not from the stars, but from the throne of heaven.
Reflection
In a dusty New Mexico town, people once looked to the sky with wonder, imagining beings from distant galaxies coming to visit Earth. It might seem like science fiction, but in a deeper spiritual sense, Christians live with a similar anticipation—not for alien beings, but for the return of Christ.
I remember stopping for gas just outside of Roswell a few years ago. The station had a gift shop filled with little green aliens, t-shirts that read "We are not alone," and even a fake UFO suspended from the ceiling. A father was explaining to his kids what “Roswell” was famous for, and the little girl asked, “But Daddy, are there really aliens?”
The father chuckled and said, “No one really knows. But it’s fun to imagine.” I thought to myself, We do know we are not alone. And we don’t have to imagine. God sent His Son from heaven to dwell among us, and we await His return. Jesus was the ultimate “visitor” to Earth—not in mystery, but in majesty.
Application
Live today as a citizen of heaven. Let your values, your choices, and your interactions reflect the kingdom you belong to, not the world you’re passing through. In a culture fascinated with the idea of life beyond Earth, be a witness to the truth that eternal life has already come to us in Christ. When others ask, “Do you think we’re alone?”—you can gently share the deeper truth: God is with us.
Conclusion
Though headlines may stir up curiosity about extraterrestrial life, the greatest news is not what may have come from the stars—but who came from heaven. As believers, our hearts long for home—not in outer space, but in the presence of God. And until that day comes, we are called to live as ambassadors from that far country—bringing love, peace, and hope into a world still searching the skies.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus from heaven to walk among us, to teach us, to save us. In a world filled with questions and mysteries, remind us daily of the truth: that we belong to You, and our true home is with You. As we await Christ’s return, help us live as faithful citizens of heaven—offering grace and light in this world. Keep our eyes lifted, our hearts steady, and our hope alive. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
