The Answer Is Still Blowin’ in the Wind

The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)

Introduction

On July 9, 1962, a young Bob Dylan stepped into a recording studio and gave voice to a generation with the now-iconic song “Blowin’ in the Wind.” With haunting simplicity, Dylan posed questions about war, peace, and human dignity—questions that seemed to have no easy answers. Likewise, Jesus once spoke of the wind to Nicodemus—not to stir confusion, but to explain the mystery of the Spirit’s movement in our lives. In both song and scripture, the wind becomes a metaphor for deeper truths waiting to be discovered.

Reflection

A summer breeze can feel like a kiss on a hot day, especially here in the desert. You don’t see where it starts or where it ends—you just feel it, moving across your skin, stirring the trees, lifting the dust. In Dylan’s song, the wind carries questions of justice and hope, pain and promise. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Spirit moves like that wind—unpredictable, unseen, and undeniable.

Consider the ordinary moment of a child flying a kite. The child doesn’t control the wind. All they can do is hold on, adjust the line, and let the current lift the kite higher. Likewise, in life, we often want clear answers—concrete directions. But God’s Spirit moves like the wind, inviting us to trust, to listen, and to follow, even when we don’t see the full path ahead.

Application

Today, ask yourself: Are you trying to control the wind, or are you letting the Spirit lead you? So often we demand clarity before we move, but faith isn’t always about certainty—it’s about obedience and trust. Be open to how the Spirit might be moving in your conversations, your decisions, or even in unexpected interruptions. Let the questions stir you toward compassion, and let the wind carry you toward someone who needs your encouragement or help.

Conclusion

Just as Bob Dylan's song gave voice to questions the world couldn’t ignore, so too does the Holy Spirit stir questions in our souls that point us to deeper trust in God. The answers may still be “blowin’ in the wind,” but the wind is not aimless—it is the breath of God, leading us to live with courage, faith, and love.

Prayer

Spirit of the Living God, You move like the wind—mysterious, free, and full of life. Help me to stop chasing certainty and start following Your movement. When I cannot see the full answer, give me peace to rest in Your presence. Let Your breath stir my soul, renew my strength, and guide my steps today. May I be a vessel of Your love in a world still longing for answers. Amen.
