Praying the Scriptures

Monday Evening Prayer

July 21, 2025

My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. (Psalm 84:2–4)

O Lord, my God,

As I stand beneath this vast desert sky, the last light of day slipping behind Red Mountain, my soul stretches out to You in the quiet. The warm hues of rose and amber still cling to the ridges, and now, one by one, the stars begin to twinkle—gentle reminders that You are near, even in the hush of night.

My heart aches with longing for Your presence. Like the psalmist, I can barely contain my desire to dwell with You—to rest in the shelter of Your courts. It is not just my soul that longs, but my whole being—heart and flesh joined together in joy and yearning for the living God.

All around me, the desert stills. The wind quiets its breath. The creosote holds the heat of the day, and the earth sighs into evening. In this sacred stillness, I sense the nearness of Your Spirit, hovering tenderly like the wings of the sparrow who finds her home by Your altar. How I long to be like her—nestled close to You, sheltered, known, and at peace.

Red Mountain stands silhouetted against the deepening sky, a silent witness to Your glory. And I, small beneath the heavens, find comfort in knowing that I, too, have a place in Your dwelling. You are my refuge, my sanctuary, my joy.

So I lift my heart to You in the twilight. Let this night draw me into the hidden places of Your grace. May I rest beneath Your gaze, content and unafraid, ever singing Your praise—even in silence.

Amen.

May the peace of the Lord, who shelters even the sparrow, rest upon you tonight and lead you gently into His abiding presence.
