Treasures That Endure
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19–21)
Introduction
As autumn arrives and fields are gathered in, our thoughts often turn to storing, saving, and preparing. Jesus’ words remind us to pause and consider what we are truly gathering. Earthly treasures may fill barns, banks, or closets, but only heavenly treasures endure.
Reflection
Imagine cleaning out a garage to give to a church rummage sale before winter. Boxes once packed with things you thought you’d never part with now seem unnecessary. Items have rusted, clothing has been eaten by moths, or gadgets that once felt so important are outdated. What once seemed valuable has lost its worth.
Jesus draws this same contrast: earthly things inevitably fade, spoil, or get stolen. But heavenly treasures—acts of kindness, generosity, forgiveness, love—cannot be diminished. These are the things that last into eternity.
Harvest season illustrates this well. Grain stored in silos feeds people for a season, but the seeds of faith, mercy, and service planted in others’ lives reap a harvest that never perishes.
Application
Take time this week to look at where your energy, money, and attention go. Are you primarily building earthly barns, or are you investing in eternal storehouses? Ask yourself: What am I gathering this fall that will matter in heaven? Consider a simple act: give to someone in need, reconcile with someone estranged, or dedicate extra time to prayer and service. These are treasures that thieves cannot touch.
Conclusion
The changing seasons remind us that earthly things are fleeting. But Christ invites us to invest in a harvest that cannot be lost. When our hearts are rooted in heaven’s treasures, we discover peace that endures beyond any season.
Prayer
Lord of the harvest, as I see the fields gathered in and the days grow shorter, help me remember that earthly treasures fade away. Teach me to store up treasures in heaven—acts of love, faith, and service—that will never perish. Guide my heart to find its true home in You, and may my priorities reflect the eternal kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
