Praying the Scriptures

Thursday Evening Prayer

September 18, 2025

The twelve gates are twelve pearls, each of the gates is a single pearl, and the street of the city is pure gold, transparent as glass. I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. (Revelation 21:21–23)

Gracious Lord,

I thank You for the gift of this day, for the light that has guided my steps and the mercy that has sustained me. As the sun lowers and shadows stretch across the earth, I turn my heart to the eternal light that never fades.

I picture the holy city, the New Jerusalem, with its gates of pearl standing strong and welcoming, its streets of pure gold gleaming like glass beneath the radiance of Your glory. I marvel that there is no temple there, for You Yourself, Almighty God, and the Lamb are the dwelling place of holiness.

How wondrous it is that in that city there is no need of sun or moon, for Your presence outshines them all. Tonight, as the heavens darken and earthly lights flicker on, I rest in the assurance that Your glory is brighter than any star, and the Lamb is the lamp that cannot be extinguished.

As I lay down my burdens and prepare for rest, grant me peace that flows from this vision of eternity. Let the promise of Your city fill me with trust, that even in the night hours I am surrounded by Your light.

So now, Lord, I entrust myself to Your care. May I sleep in the hope of Your glory, and rise in the morning renewed to walk again in Your light.

Amen.

May the eternal light of God’s glory and the gentle lamp of the Lamb grant you peace through the night and hope for the dawn.
