A Vapor and a Legacy

Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (James 4:14)

Introduction

James reminds us of life’s brevity and uncertainty. Our days are like a mist—present for a moment, then gone. This truth frames both the lives of saints and the grief of nations. On September 5, 1997, the world lost St. Teresa of Calcutta, remembered for her radical compassion. Just one day later, on September 6, the world gathered to mourn Princess Diana, whose life was cut short but whose legacy of compassion stirred millions. Their stories remind us that while life is fleeting, what we do with our days matters deeply before God.

Reflection

James’ words are sobering: our lives are not permanent monuments but fleeting vapors. Yet even a mist can refresh, bless, and give life to others.

Think of a morning dew on desert grass: it glimmers briefly in the sun, nourishing fragile roots before evaporating. Its presence is temporary, but its impact is real. In the same way, Mother Teresa poured out her fleeting days in service to Christ, finding Him in the hungry, the sick, and the forgotten. Princess Diana, though often burdened by the pressures of fame, captured the world’s attention through small but powerful acts of compassion—touching the untouchable, comforting the grieving. Their lives were like mist, but the refreshment they brought still lingers.

Application

We do not control the number of our days, but we do control how we live them. James challenges us to humility, reminding us not to boast of tomorrow but to use today for God’s purposes.

Today’s challenge: look for Christ in the “least of these” (Matthew 25:40). A kind word to a stranger, a phone call to someone lonely, or an act of generosity can leave a legacy of love far greater than we imagine. Just as dew nourishes unseen roots, your small act of faith may sustain a weary soul.

Conclusion

Our lives are brief, but not insignificant. Whether in hidden service like Mother Teresa or in the spotlight like Princess Diana, what matters most is allowing God’s love to flow through us in the time we are given. The mist may vanish, but the love of Christ endures forever.

Prayer

Lord of eternity, You hold our days in Your hands. Teach us to number our moments wisely, that we may live not for ourselves but for You. Help us see Your face in the forgotten, to bring comfort where there is grief, and to walk humbly in the path of compassion. May the mist of our lives reflect the light of Your eternal glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
