Into the Unknown with Faith

I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! (Psalm 27:13–14)

Introduction

Faith often requires us to step into places we have never been, trusting that God’s hand will steady our steps. The psalmist’s call to courage and patience echoes through the centuries, reminding us that resilience is born not from certainty of outcomes, but from trust in God’s providence. On this day in 1620, the Mayflower set sail, carrying Pilgrims into the vast unknown of the Atlantic with little more than faith to guide them. Likewise, St. Magnus of Füssen, a missionary monk in 7th-century Bavaria, ventured into remote valleys and mountains to quietly share Christ’s love. Both remind us that faith equips us to walk where fear might otherwise stop us.

Reflection

Stepping into the unknown requires courage. For the Pilgrims, it meant braving a treacherous ocean, uncertain survival, and the hope of freedom to worship. For St. Magnus, it meant walking into forests and villages where the Gospel had not yet been heard. Both journeys embody the truth of Psalm 27: faith does not eliminate uncertainty, but it anchors us in God’s unchanging goodness.

We see this same truth in everyday life. Think of moving to a new town, beginning a job you’ve never done before, or waiting for medical results. These moments hold both fear and possibility. Like standing at the edge of a winding mountain road, unable to see what lies ahead, faith is trusting that God’s light will be enough for the next step.

Application

Today, reflect on the “unknowns” in your life. Where do you feel the pull of uncertainty—perhaps in health, family, work, or relationships? Instead of letting fear dominate, choose to place that uncertainty in God’s hands. Ask yourself: What would it look like if I trusted God’s goodness here? Take a concrete step—pray before making a decision, write down your fears and surrender them to the Lord, or encourage someone else who is facing an unknown path.

Conclusion

Whether crossing an ocean like the Pilgrims, entering a remote village like St. Magnus, or simply facing a new chapter in your own life, courage is not the absence of fear but the presence of faith. God’s promise is that His goodness will be revealed, even when the path is hidden. Wait, trust, and move forward with hope.

Prayer

Lord of the unknown, You are my light and my salvation. Give me courage when I cannot see the road ahead, and patience when the waiting feels long. As You guided the Pilgrims across the sea and St. Magnus through the forests, guide me through the uncertainties of my own journey. Strengthen my heart to trust in Your goodness, that I may walk each step in faith, hope, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
