Colossians 1:28
It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
Introduction
Colossians 1:28 serves as a cornerstone of Paul’s vision for Christian ministry. The verse encapsulates three vital elements: the proclamation of Christ, the instruction of believers, and the goal of maturity in Him. For Paul, proclaiming Christ was not an optional activity but the very essence of apostolic work. The themes of wisdom, teaching, and presenting the faithful as mature in Christ highlight the transformative purpose of the Gospel—not merely conversion but growth toward spiritual completeness. This single verse, therefore, provides a condensed mission statement for both Paul and the church: Christ is the content of the message, wisdom guides the method, and maturity in Christ defines the goal.
Commentary
Paul begins with: “It is he whom we proclaim” (hon hēmeis katangellomen). The verb katangellō (“to proclaim, announce”) indicates a public declaration with authority, underscoring that Christ—not human philosophy or religious systems—is the subject and center of the message.
“Warning everyone” (nouthetountes panta anthrōpon) employs noutheteō, which means to admonish, counsel, or correct. This conveys both urgency and pastoral care: proclamation is not only about inspiring but also about correcting false beliefs and guiding believers into truth.
“Teaching everyone in all wisdom” (didaskontes panta anthrōpon en pasē sophia). Here, teaching (didaskō) emphasizes instruction aimed at understanding and transformation. The phrase “in all wisdom” (en pasē sophia) reflects Paul’s frequent contrast between worldly wisdom and divine wisdom revealed in Christ (cf. 1 Cor 1:24, Col 2:3).
“So that we may present everyone mature in Christ” (hina parasthēsōmen panta anthrōpon teleion en Christō). The goal is teleios—a term meaning complete, whole, or spiritually mature. This maturity is not mere moral refinement but wholeness rooted in union with Christ. The phrase “in Christ” reminds us that maturity is inseparable from relationship with Him.
The verse’s repetition of panta anthrōpon (“everyone”) three times emphasizes inclusivity—Paul’s ministry reaches all, not a select spiritual elite.
Understanding the Context
This verse sits within a section (Colossians 1:24–29) where Paul reflects on his ministry as a steward of the mystery of Christ. Earlier in the chapter, he exalts the supremacy of Christ (vv. 15–20), portraying Him as the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, and the one through whom all things are reconciled. The Gospel, therefore, is not a private truth but a cosmic reality.
Within this framework, Colossians 1:28 expresses the practical outworking of Paul’s mission: to proclaim Christ universally and to nurture believers into spiritual wholeness. The pastoral concern is evident—Paul longs not just for converts but for a community deeply rooted in Christ, resistant to false teachings, and flourishing in wisdom. His ministry model blends proclamation, correction, and discipleship, aiming toward full maturity in Christ.
Application for Today
For the modern Christian, this verse offers a blueprint for discipleship and ministry.
Preaching and Evangelism – Christ remains the center of the message. The church must guard against replacing the Gospel with self-help or cultural ideologies.
Discipleship and Mentoring – Spiritual growth requires both encouragement and correction. “Warning” implies loving confrontation, while “teaching” points to intentional instruction in Scripture.
Wisdom in Ministry – Teaching must be contextual, Spirit-led, and grounded in God’s wisdom rather than worldly methods.
Maturity as the Goal – Christianity is not about remaining in spiritual infancy but about being conformed to Christ’s likeness. Maturity involves discernment, perseverance, and Christlike character.
Inclusivity of Mission – Paul’s repetition of “everyone” reminds today’s church that discipleship is not for a privileged few. All are invited to grow in Christ, regardless of background, education, or status.
In an age of distraction, superficiality, and consumer-driven spirituality, Paul’s words challenge us to pursue depth, wisdom, and maturity in Christ.
Reflection
Colossians 1:28 invites us to consider whether our lives and churches mirror Paul’s vision: proclaiming Christ faithfully, guiding others wisely, and striving for maturity rather than mere comfort or popularity. Maturity in Christ is not perfection but wholeness—integrating faith into every area of life and helping others do the same. This verse also challenges us to self-examine: Are we being shaped into Christ’s likeness? Are we helping others grow toward that same maturity? In short, Paul’s mission becomes our mission, calling us to a life of faithful proclamation, wise teaching, and shared growth in Christ.
