Luke 2:1, 4-5
1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.… 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
Luke 2:1 mentions that Caesar Augustus issued a decree for a census to be taken of the entire Roman world. This political move is significant as it provides a timestamp for when the events occurred and highlights Roman governance's reach over the lands where the story unfolds. It also introduces the reason why Joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem, which fulfills the prophecy about the Messiah's birthplace.

Verses 4-5 continue to narrate Joseph and Mary's journey to Bethlehem, emphasizing Joseph's lineage from the house of David, which is a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah's lineage. It also subtly underscores the humility and simplicity surrounding Jesus' birth, with Joseph and a pregnant Mary undertaking a taxing journey without mention of grandeur or privilege.

The census, a common administrative activity, becomes a device in the divine narrative to bring Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, setting the stage for the birth of Jesus, who is to be Christ the Lord. This demonstrates how God's providence works within human history and institutions to fulfill divine promises and prophecies.
