The Daily Lectionary for TUESDAY, April 23, 2019 - Tuesday in Easter Week (Easter Tuesday)

The Daily Lectionary
TUESDAY, April 23, 2019 - Tuesday in Easter Week
(Easter Tuesday)
(Revised Common Lectionary Year C)

Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24
A Song of Victory
1  O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
     his steadfast love endures forever!

2  Let Israel say,
     “His steadfast love endures forever.”

14 The Lord is my strength and my might;
     he has become my salvation.

15 There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous:
   “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly;
16   the right hand of the Lord is exalted;
     the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.”
17 I shall not die, but I shall live,
     and recount the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord has punished me severely,
     but he did not give me over to death.

19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
     that I may enter through them
     and give thanks to the Lord.

20 This is the gate of the Lord;
     the righteous shall enter through it.

21 I thank you that you have answered me
     and have become my salvation.
22 The stone that the builders rejected
     has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This is the Lord’s doing;
     it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
     let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Judges 4:17-23; 5:24-31a
4:17 Now Sisera had fled away on foot to the tent of Jael wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between King Jabin of Hazor and the clan of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael came out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; have no fear.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 Then he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink; for I am thirsty.” So she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. 20 He said to her, “Stand at the entrance of the tent, and if anybody comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’” 21 But Jael wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, until it went down into the ground—he was lying fast asleep from weariness—and he died. 22 Then, as Barak came in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to meet him, and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he went into her tent; and there was Sisera lying dead, with the tent peg in his temple.

23 So on that day God subdued King Jabin of Canaan before the Israelites.

5:24 “Most blessed of women be Jael,
     the wife of Heber the Kenite,
     of tent-dwelling women most blessed.
25 He asked water and she gave him milk,
     she brought him curds in a lordly bowl.
26 She put her hand to the tent peg
     and her right hand to the workmen’s mallet;
   she struck Sisera a blow,
     she crushed his head,
     she shattered and pierced his temple.
27 He sank, he fell,
     he lay still at her feet;
   at her feet he sank, he fell;
     where he sank, there he fell dead.

28 “Out of the window she peered,
     the mother of Sisera gazed through the lattice:
   ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
     Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots?’
29 Her wisest ladies make answer,
     indeed, she answers the question herself:
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil?—
     A girl or two for every man;
   spoil of dyed stuffs for Sisera,
     spoil of dyed stuffs embroidered,
     two pieces of dyed work embroidered for my neck as spoil?’

31a “So perish all your enemies, O Lord!

Revelation 12:1-12
The Woman and the Dragon
12:1 A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. 2 She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pangs, in the agony of giving birth. 3 Then another portent appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, so that he might devour her child as soon as it was born. 5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne; 6 and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, so that there she can be nourished for one thousand two hundred sixty days.
Michael Defeats the Dragon

7 And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming,

   “Now have come the salvation and the power
     and the kingdom of our God
     and the authority of his Messiah,
   for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down,
     who accuses them day and night before our God.
11 But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb
     and by the word of their testimony,
   for they did not cling to life even in the face of death.
12 Rejoice then, you heavens
     and those who dwell in them!
   But woe to the earth and the sea,
     for the devil has come down to you
   with great wrath,
     because he knows that his time is short!”

https://www.biblegateway.com/devotionals/un-dia-vez/2019/04/23

Standing Strong Through the Storm - THE HELMET OF SALVATION

https://www.biblegateway.com/devotionals/standing-strong-through-the-storm/2019/04/23

THE HELMET OF SALVATION

Take the helmet of salvation…

In describing the Christian’s helmet, Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:8, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.” The best armor you can give a soldier is the kind that cannot be destroyed by the enemy. Paul, knowing the eternal nature of God’s salvation, exhorts the servant-soldier to put on—that is, believe in—the hope of life beyond this world. Soldiers without fear of death? What a mighty force!

God also provides the helmet to protect our minds. When the enemy tries to infiltrate our thinking with doubts about our salvation, the helmet becomes our protection.

You are God’s own child. He Himself redeemed you from slavery. He does not want the enemy to overcome you. You are secure in your relationship with God. The power within you is greater than the power in your enemy. Give no place to doubt. Take your stand for God in confidence wearing you helmet of salvation.

Teshome comes from northern Ethiopia and grew up in the traditional Orthodox Church. In Sunday school he was taught that the evangelical Christians eat the meat of dogs and cats when they celebrate Holy Communion. Their Sunday school teachers made a mistake by asking them to read the gospels and so Teshome discovered the truth about Jesus Christ. He went to evangelical Christians to hear more about Jesus. He found that his Sunday school teachers, priests and bishops were teaching him lies. He accepted Christ. After this he was chased away by his family, community and congregation.

Brother Teshome and new friends went to live with Christians who received them in their homes. It was during their stay with these Christians that they heard about a well-established evangelical church. They contacted its leadership and joined after getting a positive reply. Presently they have sixty members in their region. Brother Teshome’s vision is to go back to his people and witness to them.

RESPONSE: Today I put on the helmet of salvation so Satan will not have a stronghold on my thoughts.

PRAYER: Lord, I rejoice in my salvation and ask You to help me keep my mind focused on You.

A Shameless Audacity

Today’s Truth

Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.
~ Psalm 136:2 (NIV)

Friend to Friend

I want it all. I want everything God has for me. However, I don’t believe my life really reflects that attitude. I tend to settle for so much less than God’s very best for my life.

God longs to pour out His blessings on His children. We have somehow bought into the lie that we will receive good things from God by working harder, trying to be better or doing more good things. Girlfriend, that is from the pit and smells like smoke.

We are saved by God’s grace and nothing we do or don’t do will ever be good enough to earn the favor of God. In Ephesians the apostle Paul tells us that salvation is a gift – period.

Ephesians 2:8 (NIV) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God … “

If we could earn salvation, it would simply be a salary for works we have done. We are saved through faith in God alone. Salvation and the blessings of God are His gifts to us. We simply receive them. And yet, we try to make the blessings of God seem almost impossible to experience. He is just waiting for us to seek Him … to listen for His voice … and then to follow Him.

Just imagine that today is your child’s birthday. You have a wonderful party planned and have spent a lot of time picking out the perfect birthday gift. Do you expect your child to earn that gift by cleaning the house, doing the laundry, taking out the trash and completing every job on a very long list of chores you have prepared? Of course not! You simply want to delight in the joy on your child’s face when he or she receives and opens that special gift.

I have received the gift of salvation as have many of you. We have surrendered our lives to Him and are seeking to follow Him. But I want everything He has planned for me – don’t you? The good news is that God wants us to come to Him with “shameless audacity” and ask for His blessings.

Luke 11:5-10 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Did you catch the mind-blowing truth in this passage of Scripture? The words “shameless audacity” jumped out at me for the first time as my husband preached a powerful message on this passage of Scripture. Don’t miss this truth! God wants us to pray and live and breathe with the mindset that we want everything He has planned for us now and eternally! And we can come to Him with that shameless audacity – not because of anything we have done – but because of who He is and what He has planned for each one of us. He is God! He is our Lord and Savior and our Father who is just waiting to pour out His amazing blessings on His daughters. Why? Because He loves us! He adores us! We were created by God for God. As Max Lucado says, “If God had a refrigerator our pictures would be on it!”

Today, grab hold of the truth that in the eyes of God you are somebody special. You are planned and wanted. You belong. You are chosen. Come before Him and tell Him you want it all! Yes, you want everything He has planned for you! Now hold out your hands, girlfriend. God’s highest and richest blessings for your life are on their way!

Let’s Pray

Father, I am tired of settling for the meager leftovers this world has to offer. Forgive me for not being willing to step out in faith and seek You and the plan You have for my life. Lord, I really do want everything You have in store for me. Right now, I come to You in shameless audacity and ask that You pour those blessings into my life. I receive them from Your hand of mercy and grace and thank You in advance for what You are going to do in my life as I seek and follow You.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Read and memorize Ephesians 2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” How would you define “grace” and “faith” as they apply to your life?

"A Game of Whack-a-Mole"

Apr. 23, 2019

Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women ... But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."

You've probably seen the game Whack-a-Mole. Plastic moles come up out of holes in the game surface, and your job as a player is to whack them on the head with a hammer, forcing them back into their holes. Of course, they never stay gone forever—as soon as you whack one mole, you can count on it coming right back.

The Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem must have felt like they were playing a game of Whack-a-Mole. First, there was Jesus, healing and teaching and becoming vastly popular with the people. They arrested Him and put Him to death. But now Jesus was back again, in the person of His disciples. They also were teaching and healing, and "the people held them in high esteem. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women."

What could they do? The same thing they did the first time—they arrested the disciples, just like Jesus. But again, it didn't work. An angel came and opened the doors to their prison, sending them to the temple to start teaching about Jesus again!

It must have been incredibly frustrating for the priests. But I imagine it was rather hard on the disciples as well. They were not idiots. They knew perfectly well that the last time the priests got this jealous of anyone, He wound up crucified.

But it didn't stop them. They continued to teach others about Jesus. How could they do that, when they knew the price they might pay for it? Only in one way—by putting their trust in Jesus, laying the whole weight of their fears on Him.

Most of us don't live under the same sort of persecution the disciples did. And yet sometimes we, too, feel like we are on the receiving end of a Whack-a-Mole hammer. We run into temptation after temptation. Trials afflict us—disease, death, loss of work or home or friendships. Just keeping going as a Christian can sometimes be incredibly hard. We think we're finally getting somewhere, and then BAM! The hammer comes down again.

What can we do in this situation? Exactly the same thing as the disciples did. We can throw our whole weight of trust onto Jesus our Savior—not trying to handle things ourselves, but totally leaning on Him for help. He knows what it is like to suffer and be weary. He loved us enough to die for us. He will certainly help us.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me when the troubles of my life become too much. Strengthen me through Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
