The Judgment of the Nations
Matthew 25:31-46

The Daily Lectionary
WEDNESDAY, July 17, 2019
(Revised Common Lectionary Year C)
(Semi-continuous Reading Plan)

Psalm 7
Plea for Help against Persecutors
A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjaminite.
1  O Lord my God, in you I take refuge;
     save me from all my pursuers, and deliver me,
2  or like a lion they will tear me apart;
     they will drag me away, with no one to rescue.

3  O Lord my God, if I have done this,
     if there is wrong in my hands,
4  if I have repaid my ally with harm
     or plundered my foe without cause,
5  then let the enemy pursue and overtake me,
     trample my life to the ground,
     and lay my soul in the dust.   Selah

6  Rise up, O Lord, in your anger;
     lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;
     awake, O my God; you have appointed a judgment.
7  Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered around you,
     and over it take your seat on high.
8  The Lord judges the peoples;
     judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness
     and according to the integrity that is in me.

9  O let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
     but establish the righteous,
   you who test the minds and hearts,
     O righteous God.
10 God is my shield,
     who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge,
     and a God who has indignation every day.

12 If one does not repent, God will whet his sword;
     he has bent and strung his bow;
13 he has prepared his deadly weapons,
     making his arrows fiery shafts.
14 See how they conceive evil,
     and are pregnant with mischief,
     and bring forth lies.
15 They make a pit, digging it out,
     and fall into the hole that they have made.
16 Their mischief returns upon their own heads,
     and on their own heads their violence descends.

17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness,
     and sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

Amos 5:1-9
A Lament for Israel’s Sin
5:1 Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

2  Fallen, no more to rise,
     is maiden Israel;
   forsaken on her land,
     with no one to raise her up.

3  For thus says the Lord God:
   The city that marched out a thousand
     shall have a hundred left,
   and that which marched out a hundred
     shall have ten left.

4  For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:
   Seek me and live;
5    but do not seek Bethel,
   and do not enter into Gilgal
     or cross over to Beer-sheba;
   for Gilgal shall surely go into exile,
     and Bethel shall come to nothing.

6  Seek the Lord and live,
     or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire,
     and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it.
7  Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood,
     and bring righteousness to the ground!

8  The one who made the Pleiades and Orion,
     and turns deep darkness into the morning,
     and darkens the day into night,
   who calls for the waters of the sea,
     and pours them out on the surface of the earth,
   the Lord is his name,
9  who makes destruction flash out against the strong,
     so that destruction comes upon the fortress.

Matthew 25:31-46
The Judgment of the Nations
25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

The Daily Lectionary is a three year cyclical lectionary. We are currently in Year C. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent in 2019, we will be in Year A. The year which ended at Advent 2018 was Year B. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect and digest on what they heard in worship. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

The Morning Prayer for WEDNESDAY, July 17, 2019

Wednesday Morning Prayer

Lord on this day of the week I recall the strength of the Trinity in my life. Thank you for the strands that hold me safe in the Father, that bring redemption and grace in the Son, and freedom and hope through the Holy Spirit. Thank you for this cord of strength. May I celebrate with the Three that encircle my life! And this day may I give out the love of the Father, the grace of the Son and the freedom of the Holy Spirit in all I do. Amen.

May Wednesday be a dwelling day,
Curled up on Abba's knee.
Following in the path of Christ,
With His Spirit I'm set free.
Let Wednesday always prompt my heart
To travel home to nest.
To feel the blessings of my faith
To know Your peace and rest.

Todo falla… ¡Dios no!

Standing Strong Through the Storm - Wednesday, July 17, 2019

THE MERCIFUL

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
~ Matthew 5:7 (NIV)

As we in humility recognize our “poverty of spirit,” God in His mercy forgives and equips us. Having received mercy, we are expected to show it to others.

The biblical term merciful is related to the word for empathy, which means the ability to get right inside another person’s skin until we see things with his eyes, think things with his mind and feel things with his feelings. This is what Jesus did for us in His incarnation. Thus:

Blessed are those who empathize with others until they are able to see with the eyes of others, think with their thoughts and feel with their feelings. The one who does this will find others do the same for him or her and will know that God did this for them in Christ Jesus.

How do we see our non-Christian friends? Can we see Muslims, for example, as real people groping in the semi-darkness, under the mere glimmer of light that a crescent moon provides, thinking that is all the light there is?

As we see them, mercy would be an appropriate word to describe our feeling and attitude as well as actions toward them. Just as we would go to the aid of a blind man heading in the wrong direction, so mercy should similarly drive us to go after them and show those who are willing to listen, the way to more complete light.

If we are secure in the knowledge that Christ is the Sun of Righteousness, then we do not need to prove anything but patiently and gently show others the way.

A relatively young man decided to work for the Lord in China. His father was not a Christian and very strongly opposed him. The son decided to attend a series of Christian meetings in one of the areas where he was serving. His father opposed so strongly that they quarreled before he left for the meetings. Then the son suddenly died while he was at the meetings.

The Christians there prayed and showed much concern. They knew that the news of the death would be hard for the father, so they asked a doctor to be there just in case the father needed him. When the father arrived and saw the love of the Christians, he gave his life to the Lord.

RESPONSE: Today I will see others as Jesus sees them and I will empathize with them as though in their skin.

PRAYER: Lord, help grow closer to You so that I will act like You, forgiving others and being sympathetic.

"Made Presentable"

Jul. 17, 2019

And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the Gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

"Alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds"—Wow! That's definitely out there in left field, isn't it? Pictures of heinous criminals doing rotten deeds leap to mind when I read those words. These are scoundrels whose minds are set against good and godly things, doing all manner of wrongdoing and harm—yep, those rogues are most certainly "alienated and hostile."

The sad truth is this shoe fits us all. Lest we forget, here's the apostle Paul's sober reminder: "As it is written: 'None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one'" (Romans 3:10b-12), and "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

But it doesn't have to be this way. God is the great Reconciler. As with the believers at Colossae holding fast to the truth (and for us today), Paul says our status as unrighteous aliens is over. Who we "once were" is who we are no longer. (If ever you wanted to be a "has been," this is the time.) Stripped of our alien rags and belligerence toward God, He offers us complete liberation by faith—a new status as God's people now made presentable ("above reproach") by the all-sufficient work of Christ on the cross.

This is the grace God the Father offers you and me. It's a message of hope for our transformation, a divine pardon for our sins. Whatever lives we've lived, whatever deeds we've done, Jesus took to the cross, buried them in the tomb, and triumphed over them on resurrection morn. No one is beyond the reach of God's love. "Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool" (Isaiah 1:18).

Jesus has made this possible. He is ready to present you "holy and blameless and above reproach" before God the Father. He tells us this Himself: "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief (the devil) comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep" (John 10:9-11).

THE PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for making us holy by faith in Your beloved Son. In His Name we pray. Amen.

Reflection Questions:
  • Sometimes we all feel alienated. How often is that a result of our own making?
  • How had the Gospel in Paul's day already been "proclaimed in all creation under heaven"?
  • Is your redemption from sin liberating to you on a daily basis?
