Psalm 72

(The righteous shall flourish)
Blessed be the Lord, who alone does wondrous things.

Blessed be his glorious name forever. May his glory fill the whole earth.

Truly God is good to the upright, to those who are pure in heart.

As for me, my feet almost stumbled and my steps nearly slipped. I was envious of the arrogant and saw the prosperity of the wicked.

When I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I perceived their end, and the justice and mercy of God.

I am continually with you, O Lord. You hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel. For me it is good to be near God. I have made the Lord God my refuge, and I will tell of all your works.

Heavenly Father, we praise You for the many blessings You bestow upon us. We honor You for the faithfulness You show to Your children from generation to generation. We pray that You will cleanse us from all unrighteousness so we can live and work with pure hearts. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, so we can tell others of Your saving grace and mighty works, even as we pray in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”
(A voice crying in the wilderness)
God’s People Are Comforted
1  Comfort, O comfort my people,
     says your God.
2  Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
     and cry to her
   that she has served her term,
     that her penalty is paid,
   that she has received from the Lord’s hand
     double for all her sins.

3  A voice cries out:
   “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord,
     make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4  Every valley shall be lifted up,
     and every mountain and hill be made low;
   the uneven ground shall become level,
     and the rough places a plain.
5  Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
     and all people shall see it together,
     for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

6  A voice says, “Cry out!”
     And I said, “What shall I cry?”
   All people are grass,
     their constancy is like the flower of the field.
7  The grass withers, the flower fades,
     when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
     surely the people are grass.
8  The grass withers, the flower fades;
     but the word of our God will stand forever.
9  Get you up to a high mountain,
     O Zion, herald of good tidings;
   lift up your voice with strength,
     O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,
     lift it up, do not fear;
   say to the cities of Judah,
     “Here is your God!”
10 See, the Lord God comes with might,
     and his arm rules for him;
   his reward is with him,
     and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
     he will gather the lambs in his arms,
   and carry them in his bosom,
     and gently lead the mother sheep.

(John the Baptist concerning his own ministry)
The Testimony of John the Baptist
1:19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said,

   “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,
   ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’”

as the prophet Isaiah said.

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” 28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

The Daily Lectionary is a three year cyclical lectionary. We are currently in Year A. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent in 2023, we will be in Year B. The year which ended at Advent 2022 was Year A. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect and digest on what they heard in worship. The Morning Prayer for Saturday, December 3, 2022

The Morning Prayer
Saturday, December 3, 2022

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.
Luke 1:76–79 (NIV)

Lord our God, we thank you that you let light shine out every day and every year. Thank you that we may always look to you, whose right hand will bring order into everything and set all things right, even in difficult times. May our hearts receive strength to persevere and go on praising you, for you remain, no matter what happens on earth. You are our God, you have sent us the Savior, and we can draw close to you. You have made us the firm promise that your day is coming when truth and justice will arise on earth to the glory of your name. May the hearts of many people turn to you so that they worship you and call to you for help, to the glory of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Verse of the Day for Saturday, December 3, 2022

Verse of the Day
Saturday, December 3, 2022

John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
The crowd’s request that Jesus give them this bread from heaven is reminiscent of the woman’s request for living water. Jesus responded by declaring himself to be the bread of life. This is the first of Jesus’ seven “I am” statements. Jesus’ use of “I am” would have caused his audience to think of God’s name in Exodus 3:14. Jesus promised to satisfy their deepest hunger and thirst if they would come to him (put their faith in him). Even though the crowd saw his miracles, they refused to believe in him. Everyone the Father gives to the Son will believe in Jesus, and he will never drive them away. Jesus made repeated references to the last day throughout the discourse.
