Psalm 29

Praise the glory of God

1  Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
     ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2  Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
     worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

3  The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
     the God of glory thunders,
     the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
4  The voice of the Lord is powerful;
     the voice of the Lord is majestic.
5  The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
     the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6  He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
     Sirion like a young wild ox.
7  The voice of the Lord strikes
     with flashes of lightning.
8  The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
     the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9  The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
     and strips the forests bare.
   And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
     the Lord is enthroned as King forever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;
     the Lord blesses his people with peace.

     she cares not that her labor was in vain,
17 for God did not endow her with wisdom
     or give her a share of good sense.
18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run,
     she laughs at horse and rider.

19 “Do you give the horse its strength
     or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
20 Do you make it leap like a locust,
     striking terror with its proud snorting?
21 It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,
     and charges into the fray.
22 It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing;
     it does not shy away from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against its side,
     along with the flashing spear and lance.
24 In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
     it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
25 At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’
     It catches the scent of battle from afar,
     the shout of commanders and the battle cry.

The Spirit in the community

12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

John Wesley, who founded the Methodist movement, wrote, “One of the principle rules of religion is to lose no occasion of serving God. And since he is invisible to our eyes, we are to serve him in our neighbor; which he receives as if done to himself in person, standing visibly before us.”

Lord, we want to serve you in the love we show our neighbors. Teach us to embrace each person made in your image as if we were greeting you. Amen.

Semana de meditación:

¿Tu casa es un cuadrilátero?

Así dice el Señor [...] «Búsquenme y vivirán».

Es triste, pero a muchos nos ha tocado en alguna época de nuestra vida ver algún lugar de la casa convertido en un ring de pelea. Quiero que sepan que lo viví en algunas oportunidades. Durante mi primer matrimonio, tuve algunos problemas por violencia doméstica. Así que mi cuarto, baño y cocina fueron un cuadrilátero donde el público eran dos criaturas que temblaban de miedo.

¡Cuántas mujeres maltratadas saben de lo que estoy hablando! Sin embargo, no solo se trata de peleas entre parejas, también existen entre padres e hijos que se faltan al respeto. Incluso, puede haber algunos golpes en esas discusiones.

El problema no termina aquí, ¿qué me dicen de los hermanos en los que menos los une es el amor? Se odian y se desafían dentro de la casa a puño limpio, sin importar que el público presente sea sus padres y a veces abuelos.

Dios no formó la familia para que tú y yo la despedacemos de esa manera. A veces pienso en qué sentirá Dios cuando ve desde el cielo tanta agresividad.

Padres, hijos, no podemos permitir que esto siga pasando. Queremos hogares felices e hijos estables. Debemos cortar de raíz la violencia dentro de la familia. Si tu hogar está expuesto a este tipo de situación, debes buscar ayuda de inmediato.

MEDITATE ON GOD’S WORD

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

— Psalm 119:11 (NIV)

Over and over the Scriptures direct us to meditate on God’s Word. This activity takes time and discipline but brings much spiritual benefit and reward. Meditation is focused thinking about a Bible verse or passage in order to discover how we can apply its truth to our own lives.

In applying Scripture, we need to ask three primary questions.

• What did it mean to the original hearers?

• What is the underlying timeless principle?

• Where or how should I practice that principle?

Here are six specific ways to meditate on a verse or passage:

• Picture it. Visualize the scene in your mind.

• Pronounce it. Say it aloud each time, emphasizing a different word.

• Paraphrase it. Rewrite the verse in your own words.

• Personalize it. Replace the pronouns or people with your own name.

• Pray it. Turn the verse into a prayer and say it back to God.

• Probe it. Ask the following questions:

- Is there any sin to confess? Is there any promise to claim?

- Is there any attitude to change? Is there any command to keep?

- Is there any example to follow? Is there any prayer to pray?

- Is there any error to avoid? Is there any truth to believe?

- Is there something for which to thank God?

When Laos was taken over by a communist government, the leading pastor, Rev. Sail was put into a prison camp for three years of “re-education.” He referred to it later as his university experience. During that time he led five men to Christ in the camp. He had no Bible so he discipled these new believers on scriptures he had memorized and internalized. Later those men became leaders in the church.

RESPONSE: Today I will learn to meditate on God’s Word.

PRAYER: Pray for Christians in prisons of the world where they do not have a Bible.

"Saved—For What?"

There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'

When God brought the freed Israelites to Mount Sinai, he told them what His plans were for them. They would be His chosen people, "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." When I was little I used to be a bit jealous of that. "How come they get to be special?" would sum up what I was feeling. "Are they any better than I?"

But of course, that wasn't what God was saying at all! God picked them to do a job—to bring the rest of the people on earth to faith in the real God.

Look at the words: "You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." Think for a moment: What are priests for? They are there to bring other people near to God—to speak God's words to the people, and to help people draw near to God in prayer and worship. Israel was supposed to do that with regards to the rest of the world—to pray for them, to witness to them, and to do whatever they could to bring all the nations to the living God, their Maker and Savior.

To be sure, when we look at the Old Testament record we don't see a lot of success in this area. There are the occasional foreigners who pop up—people like Ruth and Rahab, some of David's soldiers, the mixed multitude of foreigners who joined Israel when they went up out of Egypt, out of slavery. So yes, some did come to faith. But there's no telling what might have happened if Israel hadn't kept falling away from the Lord. Their own disobedience and faithlessness as a group meant that the rest of the world pretty much went on sitting in darkness—until the day Jesus came to finish Israel's job.

But now? Now we have a second chance to get it right. 1 Peter 2:9 says to us almost the same thing God said to the Israelites: "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." We are also saved to serve, not saved to sit.

But how will this be any different? We too are sinners, no better than the Israelites. But we have one huge advantage—no, two! We know that God Himself has already come into this world as a human being, to live and to suffer and lay down His life for us—and to rise from the dead. We know clearly that whoever trusts in Him will be rescued from evil and have life and joy forever. So we can say that.

And we have the Holy Spirit living in us, to do the speaking. It can be scary opening our mouths to talk about Jesus. But the Holy Spirit will handle everything, if we ask Him. He knows how to use us best—and in His hands, we don't need to worry about messing up. It's His business, and He will make it right.

THE PRAYER: Lord, use me to help others come to trust in Jesus—and help me when I am afraid or nervous. Amen.

[Israel] Acamparon allí, delante del monte. El Señor llamó a Moisés desde el monte, y Moisés subió para hablar con Dios. Y Dios le dijo: «Habla con la casa de Jacob. Diles lo siguiente a los hijos de Israel: "Ustedes han visto lo que he hecho con los egipcios, y cómo los he tomado a ustedes y los he traído hasta mí sobre alas de águila. Si ahora ustedes prestan oído a mi voz, y cumplen mi pacto, serán mi tesoro especial por encima de todos los pueblos, porque toda la tierra me pertenece. Ustedes serán para mí un reino de sacerdotes y un pueblo santo."

Luego de liberar a los israelitas y llevarlos al Monte Sinaí, Dios les dijo cuáles eran sus planes para ellos: serían su pueblo elegido, "un reino de sacerdotes y un pueblo santo". Cuando era pequeña solía estar un poco celosa de eso. "¿Cómo es que llegan a ser especiales?", pensaba. "¿Acaso son mejores que yo?"

Pero por supuesto que no era eso lo que Dios estaba diciendo. Dios los escogió para hacer un trabajo: llevar al resto de las personas de la tierra a la fe en el Dios real.

Mira las palabras: "Serán para mí un reino de sacerdotes y un pueblo santo". Piensa por un momento: ¿Para qué son los sacerdotes? Están allí para acercar a otras personas a Dios, para hablar la palabra de Dios a las personas y ayudarlas a acercarse a Dios en oración y adoración. Se suponía que Israel debía hacer eso con respecto al resto del mundo: rezar por ellos, testificarles y hacer todo lo posible para llevar a todas las naciones al Dios viviente, su creador y salvador.

Sin duda, cuando leemos el Antiguo Testamento no vemos mucho éxito en esta área. Hay ocasionales extranjeros que aparecen: personas como Ruth y Rahab, algunos de los soldados de David, la multitud mixta de extranjeros que se unieron a Israel cuando salieron de Egipto, fuera de la esclavitud. Entonces sí, algunos llegaron a la fe. Pero no se sabe qué podría haber sucedido si Israel no hubiera seguido alejándose del Señor. Su desobediencia e infidelidad como grupo significaba que el resto del mundo seguía en la oscuridad... hasta el día en que Jesús vino.

¿Y ahora? Ahora tenemos una segunda oportunidad para hacerlo bien. 1 Pedro 2:9 nos dice casi lo mismo que Dios les dijo a los israelitas: "Pero ustedes son linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, nación santa, pueblo adquirido por Dios, para que anuncien los hechos maravillosos de aquel que los llamó de las tinieblas a su luz admirable". También somos salvos para servir, no para quedarnos sentados.

Al igual que los israelitas de ese tiempo, nosotros también somos pecadores. Pero tenemos una gran ventaja, no, ¡dos! Sabemos que Dios ya ha venido a este mundo como un ser humano para vivir, sufrir, dar su vida por nosotros y resucitar de entre los muertos. Sabemos claramente que quien confía en Él será rescatado del mal y tendrá vida y gozo para siempre. Y tenemos al Espíritu Santo viviendo en nosotros para hablar. Puede ser aterrador abrir la boca para hablar de Jesús. Pero si se lo pedimos, el Espíritu Santo se encargará de todo. Él sabe cómo usarnos mejor y, en sus manos, no tenemos que preocuparnos por equivocarnos. Es asunto suyo y lo hará bien.

ORACIÓN: Señor, úsame para ayudar a otros a confiar en Jesús, y ayúdame cuando tenga miedo o esté nervioso. Amén.

Nuestra razón para gozarnos

La escritura de hoy: Salmo 149:1-5

Cuando empezó el año escolar, Julián, de catorce años de edad, se bajaba del autobús todas las tardes y llegaba hasta la casa bailando. Su mamá grababa y compartía videos de su hijo bailando al volver de la escuela. Bailaba porque disfrutaba de la vida y «hacía feliz a la gente» con cada movimiento. Un día, dos recolectores de basura tomaron un tiempo de su ajetreada actividad para zapatear, girar y bambolearse con el muchacho que inspira a otros a bailar con él. Este trío demuestra el poder del gozo sincero y contagioso.

El escritor del Salmo 149 describe la fuente original del gozo incondicional y duradero: Dios. Alienta al pueblo de Dios a unirse y cantar al Señor un cántico (v. 1). Invita a Israel a alegrarse en su Hacedor y gozarse en su Rey (v. 2). Llama a adorarlo con danza y música (vv. 1-3). ¿Por qué? Porque «el Señor tiene contentamiento en su pueblo; hermoseará a los humildes con la salvación» (v. 4).

Nuestro Padre cariñoso nos creó y sustenta el universo. Se deleita en nosotros por el solo hecho de que somos sus hijos amados. Nos diseñó, nos conoce y nos invita a tener una relación personal con Él. ¡Qué honor! Nuestro amoroso Dios viviente es la razón del gozo eterno. Podemos regocijarnos en su presencia constante y dar gracias por cada día que nos da.
