The Daily Lectionary
Wednesday, August 3, 2022
 Psalm 60; Hosea 14:1-9; Luke 12:22-31
(Revised Common Lectionary Year C)
(Semi-continuous Reading Plan)

Psalm 60
Prayer for National Victory after Defeat
To the leader: according to the Lily of the Covenant. A Miktam of David; for instruction; when he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return killed twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
1  O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses;
     you have been angry; now restore us!
2  You have caused the land to quake; you have torn it open;
     repair the cracks in it, for it is tottering.
3  You have made your people suffer hard things;
     you have given us wine to drink that made us reel.

4  You have set up a banner for those who fear you,
     to rally to it out of bowshot.   Selah
5  Give victory with your right hand, and answer us,
     so that those whom you love may be rescued.

6  God has promised in his sanctuary:
     “With exultation I will divide up Shechem,
     and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
7  Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
     Ephraim is my helmet;
     Judah is my scepter.
8  Moab is my washbasin;
     on Edom I hurl my shoe;
     over Philistia I shout in triumph.”

9  Who will bring me to the fortified city?
     Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Have you not rejected us, O God?
     You do not go out, O God, with our armies.
11 O grant us help against the foe,
     for human help is worthless.
12 With God we shall do valiantly;
     it is he who will tread down our foes.

Hosea 14:1-9
A Plea for Repentance
14:1 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
     for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
2  Take words with you
     and return to the Lord;
   say to him,
     “Take away all guilt;
   accept that which is good,
     and we will offer
     the fruit of our lips.
3  Assyria shall not save us;
     we will not ride upon horses;
   we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
     to the work of our hands.
   In you the orphan finds mercy.”

Assurance of Forgiveness
4  I will heal their disloyalty;
     I will love them freely,
     for my anger has turned from them.
5  I will be like the dew to Israel;
     he shall blossom like the lily,
     he shall strike root like the forests of Lebanon.
6  His shoots shall spread out;
     his beauty shall be like the olive tree,
     and his fragrance like that of Lebanon.
7  They shall again live beneath my shadow,
     they shall flourish as a garden;
   they shall blossom like the vine,
     their fragrance shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

8  O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
     It is I who answer and look after you.
   I am like an evergreen cypress;
     your faithfulness comes from me.
9  Those who are wise understand these things;
     those who are discerning know them.
   For the ways of the Lord are right,
     and the upright walk in them,
     but transgressors stumble in them.

Luke 12:22-31
Do Not Worry
12:22 He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

The Daily Lectionary is a three year cyclical lectionary. We are currently in Year C. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent in 2022, we will be in Year A. The year which ended at Advent 2021 was Year B. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect and digest on what they heard in worship. The Morning Prayer for Wednesday, August 3, 2022

The Morning Prayer
Wednesday, August 3, 2022

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
John 1:9–12 (NIV)

Dear Father in heaven, we thank you that we may be your children. We thank you for giving us your Spirit so that we may truly be your children. Gather us into community with you so that our minds and hearts and all that is in us may realize what joy can come to us through your gifts. Though the world today is in turmoil, in doubt, lost in material things, grant us inner quiet to receive from you the power of faith. For through faith we can learn to know what you are and what you will be to all humankind one day, through Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Verse of the Day

1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Before Samuel had even met David, the Lord chose him to lead Israel (1 Sam. 13:14). Yet even a godly man like Samuel couldn’t help but judge a man by his appearance. This is why we must continually go to the Lord for His wisdom; only He sees the heart. At his young age, David already knew the importance of obeying God fully, which is why the Lord could work through him and develop him into the ruler Israel needed (1 Sam. 16:7; Acts 13:22).
