1  O Lord my God, in you I take refuge;
     save me from all my pursuers, and deliver me,
2  or like a lion they will tear me apart;
     they will drag me away, with no one to rescue.

3  O Lord my God, if I have done this,
     if there is wrong in my hands,
4  if I have repaid my ally with harm
     or plundered my foe without cause,
5  then let the enemy pursue and overtake me,

6  Rise up, O Lord, in your anger;

4:6 I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
     and lack of bread in all your places,
   yet you did not return to me,
   says the Lord.

7  And I also withheld the rain from you
     when there were still three months to the harvest;
   I would send rain on one city,
     and send no rain on another city;
   one field would be rained upon,
     and the field on which it did not rain withered;
8  so two or three towns wandered to one town
     to drink water, and were not satisfied;
   yet you did not return to me,
   says the Lord.

9  I struck you with blight and mildew;

13 For lo, the one who forms the mountains, creates the wind,
     reveals his thoughts to mortals,

Love One Another
3:11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We must not be like Cain who was from the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17 How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?

Tuesday Morning Prayer

Lord, on this day I chose to put You first. Thank You that when You are at the center of our family, our lives are rich with love and goodness. Lord, be the running stream, springing up at the very heart of our household. Might we drink daily from the water of life, that our days would be filled with kindness, forgiveness, trust and love. Amen.

May this day be a gentle time

Of love and kindness shown,

To all my friends and family

A love that helps us grow.

Let Tuesday always prompt my heart

To place my life in You.

To see Your holy will be done

I give my life anew.

Conoce a tu pareja

Los leoncillos se debilitan y tienen hambre, pero a los que buscan al Señor nada les falta.

El Señor me está inquietando en gran medida con esto del matrimonio. Aunque esté casada, sé que muchas personas están pasando crisis matrimoniales muy fuertes.

He visto que no solo las parejas se casan en la adolescencia sin saber lo que quieren para el futuro, sino que muchos otros se casan por cubrir un error llamado «embarazo». Así que no hay tiempo de conocer a fondo a las parejas que, en vez de ser parejas, son «disparejas». No hay tiempo para conocer comportamientos durante el noviazgo, y si ven reacciones violentas, no las tienen en cuenta en el momento de tomar la decisión de casarse.

Cuando te casas pensando que todo va a hacer color de rosa, que no es verdad porque también la convivencia tiene sus ajustes, súmale a esto personas que después de casadas muestran reacciones violentas, celos enfermizos y cambios bruscos de ánimo. ¡Es muy preocupante!

Hoy te invito a que, si estás soltero, disfrutes de tu soltería. No entres en el afán absurdo de casarte por casarte y no esperar la persona adecuada en el tiempo de Dios. No obstante, si estás en la época de noviazgo y consideras la posibilidad de casarte, ora para que sea Dios el que te dé luz verde. En el caso de que seas casado, como yo, necesitamos consagrarnos a Dios guardando el matrimonio en oración constante, de modo que cada obstáculo que se levante lo superemos con su favor.

No entreguemos al enemigo nuestros hogares, sino defendámoslo, a fin de que Dios sea el centro de la relación y nuestro Consejero.

HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

~ Matthew 5:6 (NIV)

This attitude portrays a maturity of belief that shows a servant is ready for service. When completeness or wholeness is achieved, the servant receives the satisfaction of being used of God for that which they have been called, trained and equipped.

In ancient times, wages were very low and men often could not earn enough for the family to eat well. Water was also a precious commodity. The emphasis in this Beatitude is the passionate desire for the whole, for complete righteousness as a matter of life and death. Blessed indeed is the one whose most passionate desire is to love God and to love others as they ought. Thus:

Blessed are those who long for total righteousness as a starving person longs for food and as a person perishing of thirst longs for water, for they will be truly satisfied.

People of other faiths are impressed with those who take their faith seriously. They do not respect people whose religion is merely outward form, who are just “weekend Christians.” Much of what they see is materialistic, that is, “carnal” or “worldly” (see 1 Corinthians 3). Christianity turns them off—the low regard for moral purity, the hedonism, the wishy-washiness, the unwillingness to suffer or make sacrifices, the fear of making a stand.

As Brother Andrew says, “How can Muslims respect a church that is in hiding?” Christians need to acknowledge their beliefs and be willing to suffer for their faith and convictions. A more complete righteousness will definitely have great impact. It will earn respect for our preaching the Gospel.

During a visit to Indonesia, a coworker had the wonderful opportunity of participating in an Open Doors SSTS seminar held in an area of intense conflict. The constant presence of armed soldiers outside the building confirmed that this seminar was far more than theology – this was reality! More than 700 churches were already burnt to the ground and the church in the region was facing a severe onslaught.

On the second day of teaching, he remembers one pastor suddenly jumping up and with all his heart cried out, “My brother, please don’t teach us to survive, teach us to be faithful.”

RESPONSE: Today I am so grateful for God’s presence in my life that I yearn for more of Him.

PRAYER: Lord I long for total righteousness so that the world will see more of Your faithfulness in me.

And the LORD appeared to him (Abraham) by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, "O Lord, if I have found favor in Your sight, do not pass by Your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash Your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that You may pass on—since You have come to Your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said." And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, "Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes." And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "She is in the tent." The LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son."

Genesis 18 tells us the story of a day when God and two of His angels came to visit Abraham. Abraham looked up to see three travelers standing in front of him. Immediately he welcomed them and urged them to sit down in the shade while the family prepared a meal for them.

Now this is not surprising—that was how people in the Middle East treated travelers in those days. What's surprising is how far Abraham took it. First, he ran to his wife and got her to make bread—using more than five gallons of flour for only three people! Abraham also had a calf killed and roasted. He rounded out the meal by bringing milk and curds. Then he stood by his visitors as they ate, ready to bring them anything else they might need.

Now this amount of food seems over the top to me. Yet it is clear that at some point during the visit, Abraham recognized his visitors. He realized that it was the Lord Himself who had come to his family. That might explain why Abraham went to extraordinary lengths to provide a feast for his visitors. It was his way of showing love and worship to the Lord—a gift.

But Abraham had a surprise coming, for God was planning to give his family a gift as well. The Lord said to him, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And that's what happened. God topped Abraham's generosity with His own gift of love.

God has done this for us, too. He has given to us a Son—His own Son, Jesus, our Savior. He sent Jesus to become our Savior so that everyone who trusts in Him will become children of God and have everlasting life. Because Jesus died and rose again for our sakes, we who belong to Him will feast with Him in the kingdom of God.

What more generous gift could God give?

THE PRAYER: Holy Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

• What do you think it was that tipped off Abraham as to Who his visitor was?
• God comes to us in His Word. Do you make any special preparation to receive Him there?

Después el Señor se le apareció a Abrahán en el encinar de Mamre, mientras él estaba sentado a la entrada de su tienda, en el calor del día. Al levantar los ojos vio que allí, junto a él, había tres varones. Al verlos, rápidamente se levantó de la entrada de su tienda para recibirlos. Se postró en tierra, y dijo: «Señor, si en verdad he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, te ruego que no te apartes de este siervo tuyo. Mandaré traer un poco de agua, para que ustedes se laven los pies, y luego podrán descansar debajo de un árbol. Traeré también un bocado de pan, para que recobre fuerzas su corazón, y luego seguirán su camino. ¡Para eso han pasado ustedes cerca de este su siervo!» Y ellos dijeron: «Haz todo tal y como has dicho.» Entonces Abrahán fue de prisa a la tienda de Sara, y le dijo: «Toma pronto tres medidas de flor de harina, amásala, y cuece unos panes.» Luego corrió Abrahán a donde estaban las vacas y tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, se lo dio al criado, y éste se apresuró a prepararlo. Tomó además mantequilla y leche, y el becerro que había preparado, y poniéndolo ante ellos se quedó a su lado debajo del árbol, mientras ellos comían. Ellos le dijeron: «¿Dónde está Sara, tu mujer?» Y él respondió: «Aquí, en la tienda.» Uno de ellos dijo: «Ten por seguro que volveré a ti, y conforme al tiempo de gestación Sara tu mujer tendrá un hijo.»

Génesis 18 nos cuenta la historia del día en que Dios y dos de sus ángeles fueron a visitar a Abraham. Abraham levantó la vista y vio a tres viajeros de pie frente a él. Inmediatamente, les dio la bienvenida y los instó a sentarse a la sombra, mientras la familia les preparaba una comida.

Esto no debe sorprendernos. Así era como se trataba a los viajeros en aquellos días. Lo sorprendente es lo lejos que Abraham lo llevó. Primero corrió hacia su esposa y le pidió que hiciera pan, ¡usando más de cinco galones de harina para solo tres personas! Hizo matar un becerro para asarlo, completó la comida con leche y cuajada, y luego se detuvo junto a sus visitantes mientras comían, listos para traerles cualquier otra cosa que pudieran necesitar.

Parece ser una cantidad de comida exagerada. Sin embargo, está claro que en algún momento durante la visita, Abraham reconoció a sus visitantes. Se dio cuenta de que era el Señor mismo quien había llegado a su familia. Eso podría explicar por qué Abraham hizo todo lo posible por agasajar bien a sus visitantes. Era su manera de mostrar amor y adoración al Señor: un regalo.

Pero Abraham tuvo una sorpresa, porque Dios también estaba planeando darle un regalo a su familia. El Señor le dijo: "Ten por seguro que volveré a ti, y conforme al tiempo de gestación Sara tu mujer tendrá un hijo". Y eso es lo que sucedió. Dios superó la generosidad de Abraham con su propio regalo de amor.

Dios también ha hecho eso por nosotros: nos ha dado a su propio Hijo, Jesús, para que se convirtiera en nuestro Salvador, de modo que todos los que confían en Él sean hijos de Dios y tengan vida eterna. Debido a que Jesús murió y resucitó por nosotros, los que le pertenecemos festejaremos con Él en el reino de Dios.

¿Qué regalo más generoso podría dar Dios?

ORACIÓN: Padre santo, gracias por el regalo de tu Hijo Jesús. Amén.

… Tú eres mi Señor; no hay para mí bien fuera de ti (v. 2).

«Mi precioso…». Tras su primera aparición en la trilogía de Tolkien, El Señor de los anillos, la imagen de Gollum, la demacrada criatura obsesionada con el «precioso anillo del poder» se ha convertido hoy en un ícono… de la codicia, la obsesión, e incluso de la locura.

Esta imagen nos resulta inquietantemente reconocible. En su tormentosa relación de amor y odio, tanto con el anillo como con sí mismo, la voz de Gollum evoca la insatisfacción de nuestros corazones. Ya sea que esté dirigida a una cosa en particular o que sea un anhelo indefinido por «más», estamos convencidos de que cuando consigamos nuestro propio «precioso», estaremos satisfechos. Sin embargo, lo que creímos que nos llenaría nos deja una sensación de vacío peor que antes.

Hay una manera mejor de vivir. En el Salmo 16, David declara que cuando nuestro vacío interior amenaza con llevarnos a la desesperada e inútil búsqueda de satisfacción (v. 4), podemos refugiarnos en el Señor (v. 1) y recordar que fuera de Él, no tenemos nada (v. 2).

Además, cuando dejamos de buscar satisfacción «afuera» y nos enfocamos en la belleza de Dios (v. 8), encontramos el verdadero contentamiento en el gozo y las «delicias» de su presencia (v. 11).

Señor, gracias porque siempre estás conmigo. Ayúdame a acercarme a ti para disfrutar del gozo de caminar contigo.
