God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to himself, "Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?" And Abraham said to God, "O that Ishmael might live in your sight!" God said, "No, but your wife Sarah shall bear you a son, and you shall name him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him. As for Ishmael, I have heard you; I will bless him and make him fruitful and exceedingly numerous; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this season next year." And when he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. Then Abraham took his son Ishmael and all the slaves born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. That very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised; and all the men of his house, slaves born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

Hebrews 10:11-25

And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds," he also adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?" He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, "Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?" Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world." When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

When God Says No

"When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to."

~ Acts 16:7 (NIV)

The apostle Paul was concerned for the new churches he left behind in Asia Minor. He wanted to revisit those churches and check on their progress, but there was one small problem: God had a different plan. The Lord stopped Paul and Silas from going where they wanted to go.

We read in Acts 16, “When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to” (Acts 16:7). I find that fascinating. We don’t know exactly how the Holy Spirit stopped them. But clearly God said no.

Sometimes the Lord will do the same with us. We have our plans, and the Lord says no. There are many ways God can stop us. Sometimes it’s through the warning of a friend whom we respect. Sometimes it’s through the absence of peace in our lives when we start to walk in a certain direction. Circumstantially everything is looking good, but internally, something isn’t right. We have a lack of peace about it.

We are told in the book of Colossians, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (3:15). If you are starting to do something or starting to go somewhere and there is a lack of God’s peace and blessing on it, you should learn to tune in and listen to that.

Sometimes it can be circumstantial. It can be something as simple as running late for a flight or a car not starting. Whatever it might be, something happens circumstantially that stops you. However it happens, the Lord is saying no.

Maybe you had some plans, and God said no. God is wiser than we are. He is always dealing with us for our best eternal good.

Creo que sufrí por amor el noventa por ciento de mi vida. Siempre me equivocaba cuando buscaba pareja y nunca tenía a Dios como consejero. Por eso, el noventa por ciento de mi vida lo viví en desamor.

Hoy en día, supe esperar en Dios y Él fue el que trajo a mi vida a mi esposo, Edgar. Así que pude ver la diferencia: Cuando las cosas son de Dios, permanecen. De modo que pueden pasar tormentas y dificultades, pero ese amor lucha y enfrenta cada crisis en la ROCA que es Cristo.

Cuando queremos hacer nuestra voluntad y actuar como decía una antigua canción «Hagamos lo que diga el corazón», viviremos aventuras y romances que terminan en grandes tragedias, desilusiones y hasta traumas que arrastraremos por años en nuestra vida. El Manual de Instrucciones nos deja ver bien claro que «engañoso es el corazón» (Jeremías 17:8, rv-60).

Con tantas experiencias dolorosas que tuve a lo largo de mi vida y cansada de sufrir, un día por fin decidí hacer un ALTO en mi vida emocional e hice un pacto con mi Dios al decirle las siguientes palabras: «Quiero desintoxicarme de los hombres y deseo guardarme para ti y para mis princesas». Y Dios, que es amor, me tomó en sus brazos. Entonces, a partir de ese momento, pude experimentar lo que es estar quieta y esperar en Él.

Si estás cansado de una vida amorosa tormentosa, es tiempo de hacer un ALTO y pedirle a tu Padre que te dé la fuerza para dejar esa relación que está destruyendo tu vida. Así, serás capaz de decir, como yo lo hice un día: «Dios quiere lo mejor para sus hijos y siempre tiene la razón».

REMEMBER THOSE IN PRISON

Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison…

As we see in Hebrews chapter twelve, once we “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus,” we will be aware of how we should then live. The writer now turns to the issue of remembering those in prison.

Matta Boush, an outspoken evangelist in South Sudan was arrested on political charges under questionable circumstances. He was given a sentence of thirty years at a local military prison. Many people around the world prayed for him, and for his family at home.

He asked prison authorities for permission to hold prayer meetings. At first they declined, saying, “We already have a mosque; you should go there.” But Boush persisted and eventually the authorities relented. For the first prayer meeting, only six people showed up. In a few weeks, more people were going to the prayer meeting than the mosque.

A few years later, he was transferred to another city prison. As he had in the first prison, he asked for, and received permission to conduct prayer meetings. Again he was told to limit his work to non-Muslims, yet as he continued to minister to non-Muslims, they, in turn would talk to Muslims. The result was that during his five years of ministry in that prison, he helped lead between 150 and 200 people to Christ.

Transferred again to another prison, he was able to help build a prison chapel there. After several months, prison officials told him that he did not really belong in prison, so he was given the freedom to leave the prison by day and return by night. Boush was glad to get out and meet with friends he had in Khartoum, but soon he realized that he could not effectively witness to his fellow prisoners if he had freedoms they were denied. He told the prison officials he would no longer go out. He knew it was not God’s time.

Later, he was offered private air-cooled sleeping quarters (summer temperatures exceed 100º F). But Bousch’s most productive time for witnessing was at night, so he declined the offer. He saw fruit for denying his own comfort to do what he felt God was calling him to do. In ten months, 200 more people came to the Lord in the prison.

Without warning, he was one day released early and returned to his family. Matta Boush’s enemies had hoped to steal his life from him by throwing him into prison, but God had given him a true “life” sentence: to share the hope of eternal life that comes through Jesus Christ.

RESPONSE: Today I will keep my eyes fixed on Jesus remembering to identify with my brothers and sisters in prison for their faith.

PRAYER: Lord, meet the needs today of Christians around the world in prison for their faith in You. Help them to glorify You in their situation. Bless their family members waiting patiently at home.

Isaac

His name means: "He Laughs"

His work: Isaac was an accomplished farmer and herdsman.
His character: The only son of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac at a young age witnessed, through the faithfulness of his father, the meaning of obedience. He was gentle and hardworking.
His sorrow: As an old and feeble man, Isaac was victimized by the deception of his son Jacob and to his later dismay gave him the blessing that he had intended for his older son, Esau.
His triumph: Isaac is considered one of the three great patriarchs. For millennia his progeny have revered him.

A Look at the Man

When a man is hugely successful in his work, everyone notices. Some of those people celebrate his prosperity; others hate him for it. That is what Isaac experienced. He is one of the early farmers in the Scriptures with a remarkable green thumb. "Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold." But Isaac had a secret—something more powerful than a precise crop rotation strategy or specially formulated fertilizer: The Lord blessed him.

Godly excellence in the marketplace and the generous compensation that often follows it have been subjects of controversy among believers for centuries. Surely Christians are supposed to aspire to serving professions like physicians, missionaries, nurses, and teachers. But is there a place for successful, competitive businesspeople in God's plan as well?

The story of Isaac and Rebekah's years in the land of the Philistines illustrates the answer to these questions—and the reason why. As Isaac and Rebekah were leaving Canaan and looking for a new home, the Lord appeared to Isaac. "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live. Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you."

Isaac listened to God's voice and obeyed.

It didn't take too long for him to see that his neighbors were envious. The first time Isaac's servant brought word to him that one of his wells had been filled in with dirt would have been a strong indicator! Nothing specific is said about Isaac's reaction to this act of treachery, but there is no indication that Isaac was angry or vengeful. Instead, he simply sent his servants out to redig the wells or to find places for new ones.

Next, it was the king's turn to pay Isaac a visit. He asked Isaac to move, sounding much like an Egyptian pharaoh hundreds of years later. Once again Isaac could have been upset at such treatment. "After all I've done for you and your people," Isaac could have said to Abimelech, "this is the way you treat me?"

But he didn't. Instead, Isaac and Rebekah moved on, setting up yet another successful business in a new location.

Then Abimelech paid a visit to Isaac. As he greeted Isaac, the Philistine king summarized why he had come and why he wanted to establish a peace treaty with Isaac. "We saw clearly that the LORD was with you."

Why would a man pursue excellence in business?

The story of Isaac clearly gives us the answer: God had called (and gifted) Isaac for this work, and he was obedient; Isaac had shown respect for those in authority over him; he worked hard, and his efforts were productive; and Isaac did not allow the sabotage of his enemies to discourage or distract him.

What was the result of Isaac's faithfulness? God received the glory, and his name was honored among those who previously did not know or revere him.

Reflect On: Genesis 25:1-31
Praise God: For his generosity.
Offer Thanks: For the ways God has already blessed you and for all the ways he yet intends to bless you.
Confess: Any tendency to take credit for what God has given you.
Ask God: To richly bless your life as you seek to follow him.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

Not so long ago, I had a most fascinating conversation with a very nice and very honest unbeliever.

I asked him, "What can I say? What can I say to prove that Jesus Christ is your only true Savior? Should I point to the Bible?"

He replied, "The Bible claims to be true, but so do the holy books of many other religions. What makes the Bible different?"

I answered, "God's prophecies, some made thousands of years before Jesus was born, were fulfilled in the Christ. Look at every religious holy book, and you will never find any other document which can make that claim."

"What can I say?" I asked again. "Would it help if I showed you somebody who had risen from the dead? Would you believe then? No, I'm not talking about one of those ER episodes where somebody's heart stops for a few seconds. I'm talking about somebody who was really, truly dead. Would that convince you? Look, suppose you had an uncle Bob. Suppose good old uncle Bob, before he died, said he was going to come back and visit you. Would you believe him? Of course, you wouldn't. You know when a person is dead, he's dead. You might humor uncle Bob, but you wouldn't believe him. When uncle Bob died, you wouldn't keep looking over your shoulder to see if he was there. Dead people stay dead.

"Now, suppose, just suppose, three days after his funeral, uncle Bob did come and pay you a visit. Would that change your opinion? Of course, it wouldn't. You would think uncle Bob's visit was a hallucination, a dream, an over-active imagination. You're too smart to get suckered by a dream, aren't you? But what if uncle Bob showed you he was real. Suppose uncle Bob got close enough so you could feel his breath. Suppose he asked for something to eat and ate it. Suppose he said, 'Here, touch me,' and you did. Would you believe then?

"I bet you wouldn't.

"You'd think you were dreaming. Dreams can be very real. It's a logical conclusion. But what if the rest of the family had also seen uncle Bob had heard the same things you did and at the same time? Would you stay skeptical about uncle Bob's resurrection? It would be hard, wouldn't it?

"And suppose uncle Bob showed up again, and again, and again, and again. You would be left with two choices: you were crazy, or uncle Bob had kept his promise.

"If you're like most, you'd go with the second of the two choices: you'd believe. When somebody came up and said things like, 'That wasn't really uncle Bob,' you'd confess: 'Yes, it was.' All of your answers would say that uncle Bob's appearance wasn't opinion; it was reality. It was true."

Maybe someday I will tell you how that conversation ended. For now, let me say forget uncle Bob and remember Jesus Christ. Jesus was dead. He was crucified. He was stabbed with a spear. He was buried, but today He is alive. Believe it. Believe it because your eternity rests upon whether you believe Jesus is your Savior, on whether Jesus is your Redeemer, on whether you know that Jesus' truth is God's truth -- and God's truth is salvation for all who believe.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, there are many whose hearts are hardened to the Savior's salvation story. Grant us the words, wisdom, and opportunity to share Your truth in a way they might see. This I pray in the Name of the risen Savior. Amen.

Cuando recibimos a Jesucristo como Señor y Salvador, es probable que amigos, o incluso familiares, se pongan en contra nuestra. Pero al convertirnos en hijos de Dios, el Espíritu Santo nos da la fuerza para vivir en santidad, alejándonos de las malas intenciones y acciones de quienes nos rodean. De hecho, el no estar involucrados en actividades que disgustan a Dios puede causar que, quienes se oponen a nuestra fe, nos odien aún más.

Jesucristo lo sabía. Él vino a este mundo para morir por nuestros pecados, pero aun así el mundo lo odió. Jesús dijo: "Ningún siervo es más que su amo" (Juan 15:20a). Este mundo odió a nuestro amo, y ciertamente nos odiará a nosotros.

Al vivir vidas santificadas y servir a Jesucristo, somos bendecidos. Está escrito: "Bienaventurados serán ustedes cuando, por causa del Hijo del Hombre, la gente los odie, los segregue, los vitupere, y menosprecie su nombre como algo malo." (Lucas 6:22).

Si el mundo los odia, no se desanimen. Confíen en la guía del Espíritu Santo, perseveren en la lectura de la Palabra de Dios, y tengan presente el premio que los aguarda en el cielo y que es suyo a través de la fe en Jesucristo. "Todo el mundo los odiará a ustedes por causa de mi nombre, pero el que se mantenga firme hasta el fin será salvo" (Marcos 13:13).

Esta es la promesa que Dios nos ha dado.

ORACIÓN: Padre celestial, gracias por la fuerza que nos ayuda a mantenernos firmes frente a la persecución del mundo. Gracias por las bendiciones que nos otorgas cuando somos odiados por los hombres. Protégenos con tus brazos poderosos, y danos paz. En el nombre de Jesucristo. Amén.

Говорят, «счастливые часов не наблюдают». Дайте мне любимое дело, приведите человека, с которым мне легко, – и я отключусь от времени, перестану его воспринимать. Размышляя об этом, я по-новому поняла, о чем говорится в книге Откровение.

Раньше я читала, как четверо животных повторяют перед Богом одни и те же слова, и думала: «До чего же скучное у них существование!» Теперь я больше так не считаю, потому что думаю о том, что видели эти животные своими многочисленными «очами» (Откр. 4:8). Что открывалось глазам этих существ, что поражало их: Божья мудрость, величие или любовь к заблудшим творениям? И я убеждаюсь, что не может быть слов лучше, чем: «Свят, свят, свят!»

Скучно ли повторять одни и те же слова? Нет, если вы в присутствии Того, Кого любите, и если делаете то, для чего были созданы.

Подобно тем удивительным животным, мы были созданы, чтобы прославлять Бога. Наша жизнь никогда не будет скучной, если мы обратимся сердцем к Создателю и начнем исполнять свое предназначение.

Friend to Friend

When I was in elementary school, I wore thick blue eyeglasses.  They weren’t very fashionable, but at least I could read the chalkboard.  Decades later, I still need glasses or contact lenses to put the world in focus.  These tools improve my vision dramatically.  Yet sight is about more than being able to read letters far away.  It can also be about how you perceive God and your life.

Do you see life through the lens of thanks or the lens of dissatisfaction?

The answer to this simple question dramatically changes everything.

If we train our minds to look for God at work and to give thanks, we will find many things to be “marvelous in our eyes.”  If we wake up and speak out today’s truth from Psalm 118, “Let us rejoice today and be glad,” we frame the day in a perspective of praise and thanksgiving.

But if we awaken to texts on the phone, news headlines, or to-do lists, we’re bound to feel quite dissatisfied before breakfast.  If we focus on the problems instead of the Problem Solver, we struggle, unable to see clearly.

Maybe it’s time for a home eye exam that is connected to your heart.

The Apostle Paul prayed that “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people” (Ephesians 1:18, NIV).

As you choose to think of the spiritual blessings that belong to you in Christ, you can’t help but be more grateful.

In 1 Peter 2:7, we read Peter quoting today’s truth in Psalm 118:22 saying the cornerstone representing Christ is precious to those who believe, but it’s a stumbling block to those who do not believe.  To some, Christ represents life.  But to others who don’t believe, He is a rock to trip over, a reason to fall.

Each day, you can live with thanks - not because your health is perfect.  Not because you have a lot of money in the bank.  Not because your vacation is coming.

You can live with thanks and rejoicing because you are saved.  The Lord has rescued you from sin.  This is a reason to give thanks every day of the year, not just on Thanksgiving.

Remember how God has answered your prayers.

Remember the promises of God.

Put on the “eyeglasses of thanks” and you will discover many marvels to behold even today.

Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, may the eyes of my heart be enlightened to know the great hope I have in You.  Forgive me for living with limited vision.  Help me to see You at work in all things.  I rejoice that my name is written in the Lamb’s book of life.
In Jesus’ Name,
