Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19
Qui regis Israel

Leader: Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock;
People: shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim.

Leader: In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh,
People: stir up your strength and come to help us.

Leader: Restore us, O God of hosts;
People: show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Leader: O LORD God of hosts,
People: how long will you be angered despite the prayers of your people?

Leader: You have fed them with the bread of tears;
People: you have given them bowls of tears to drink.

Leader: You have made us the derision of our neighbors,
People: and our enemies laugh us to scorn.

Leader: Restore us, O God of hosts;
People: show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Leader: And so will we never turn away from you;
People: give us life, that we may call upon your Name.

Leader: Restore us, O LORD God of hosts;
People: show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Heavenly Father, we live in troubling times, and we do not know what tomorrow will bring. You have told us not to worry, but to live one day at a time. You have told us to trust in You as we pray for our daily needs. Even so, You showed Joseph how to prepare and save for the future, so we pray that You would show us what to do as well. Increase our faith in Jesus Christ and the future He has promised, even as we pray in His name:
“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”
(David reminds God of God’s promise)
7:23 Who is like your people, like Israel? Is there another nation on earth whose God went to redeem it as a people, and to make a name for himself, doing great and awesome things for them, by driving out before his people nations and their gods? 24 And you established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever; and you, O Lord, became their God. 25 And now, O Lord God, as for the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it forever; do as you have promised. 26 Thus your name will be magnified forever in the saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel’; and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house’; therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant; 29 now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you; for you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

(The one who comes from above)
The One Who Comes from Heaven
3:31 The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. 34 He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

The Daily Lectionary is a three year cyclical lectionary. We are currently in Year A. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent in 2023, we will be in Year B. The year which ended at Advent 2022 was Year A. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect and digest on what they heard in worship. The Morning Prayer for Saturday, December 17, 2022

The Morning Prayer
Saturday, December 17, 2022

For it was life which appeared before us: we saw it, we are eyewitnesses of it, and are now writing to you about it. It was the very life of all ages, the life that has always existed with the Father, which actually became visible in person to us mortal men.
1 John 1:2 (Phillips)

Lord our God, we thank you that you have given us the light of life, that we can now learn how to live, and that through your great grace we may understand life in direct relationship with the Lord Jesus, who was crucified and who rose from the dead. Grant that the power of Christ may be made visible in us. Grant that his life may become our life, that we may leave behind all doubts and anxiety, even though we are often surrounded by darkness and night. Keep us in your Word. Let your will hold sway over all the world, for your will must be done in heaven, on earth, and down to the lowest depths. Let your will be done on earth as in all the heavens. Amen.

Verse of the Day

Matthew 1:20-21
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Why didn’t the angel Gabriel appear to Joseph when he appeared to Mary? We’re not told. But God always reveals His will to us at just the right moment.
