Daily Meditation for April 23, 2016

From Forward Day by Day

Exodus 40:25-27 Set up the lamps before the LORD; as the LORD had commanded Moses. He put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before the curtain and offered fragrant incense on it.

One of the first things I ever built as an adult was a little altar. It was just big enough to sit at cross-legged. I kept a prayer book, my journal, and a Bible near it and hung a cross on the wall above it; it was my sacred space.

Consider all the dedicated spaces you have in your home. Is there a sacred space dedicated for your prayer time? Perhaps you are sitting in your sacred space right now, as you read this. If you don’t have a sacred space, get creative and make something that works for you.

Creating a space to meet with God is still an important part of my prayer life; sometimes I change it for a new season. Like the space described to Moses by God, it is a place set aside for prayer. So, whether it’s a golden altar behind a curtain, or a chair and a journal, the practice of sacred space serves to interrupt our busy-ness, drawing our hearts to prayer for an hour or an instant.
