"Who Is in Control?"

Nov. 19, 2018

The Lord reigns, He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity.
~ Psalm 93:1-2 (ESV)

I used to be a news junkie, but not any more. Now I find the news depressing. Floods. Fires. Hurricanes. International conflicts. Murders. Angry demonstrators in the streets. The world seems to be out of control. Can nobody help?

I turn the pages of the Bible and read Psalm 93. The Psalmist reminds me, "The Lord reigns, He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity." The Lord is our everlasting, never-changing God; He is our strong foundation. No matter how events rage in our world, God continues to uphold it and keep us in His care. He has not abandoned us. He is in control.

But there is even better news for us. God was not content to be an outside observer, watching the troubles in the world from a distance. No, He chose to come into our world as a human baby, the most helpless of all. He grew up in a poor family, in a backwater town of the Roman empire. As a man He walked the roads of Galilee and Judea, serving the victims of the world's evils: the poor, the sick, the forgotten, the outcast, the demon possessed. He healed, comforted, taught, and forgave. One by one, broken person by person, Jesus healed the wounds of our world.

But that was not enough for Him, either. Opposing the powers of evil, Jesus went all the way to the cross, destroying Satan's might through His own suffering and death on our behalf. He took away the power of the devil who torments our world. Then, three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, breaking the power of the grave and bringing a glad new morning to a tired and weary world. Now He promises to share that new life with every one of us who trust in Him.

No, God did not leave the world in chaos. He came to redeem it. And now we have the joy of sharing this good news with others, as we await for the day when Jesus returns in glory -- the day when He puts an end to all evil and brings us into His new heaven and new earth.

What a joyful day that will be!

THE PRAYER: Almighty Creator and Ruler of this world, surround us with Your love and power. Give us the peace that comes from trusting You. Amen.
