Embracing Diverse Gifts
God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.
1 Corinthians 12:18
Introduction

The verse from 1 Corinthians 12:18, "But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose," reminds us of the intentional diversity within the body of Christ. In his profound essay, Service and the Spectrum, Professor Daniel Bowman Jr. delves into the complex realities faced by autistic individuals in their quest to serve within their church communities. This devotional explores how Bowman’s insights can deepen our understanding of service, diversity, and mutual support in the Christian faith.

Reflection

Bowman’s narrative is a poignant reminder of the unique challenges that autistic individuals face when deciding how to serve in a church setting. Unlike many, who may find reorientation of time and energy a manageable adjustment, autistic individuals often confront a daunting array of considerations: sensory sensitivities, the need for recharging time, the timing of activities, and a supportive environment that recognizes their unique contributions while accommodating their needs.

1 Corinthians 12:18 isn’t merely about the placement of diverse gifts within the church; it’s a divine mandate to foster an environment where all members can thrive according to the unique design God has chosen for them. This verse calls for a celebration of differences and a commitment to inclusivity.

Application

How can we apply the lessons from Bowman’s experiences in our own church communities? Firstly, we must recognize and validate the diverse ways in which individuals experience and interact with the world. Churches can take proactive steps to become more inclusive by:
  • Offering flexible service roles tailored to individual strengths and needs.
  • Educating the congregation about autism and sensory sensitivities.
  • Creating quiet spaces for individuals who need to recharge.
  • Scheduling events at times that are considerate of all participants’ needs.
Conclusion

The journey of inclusivity in service is not just about accommodating differences but celebrating them as essential aspects of God’s divine tapestry. Bowman’s essay challenges us to look beyond conventional understandings of service and to forge paths that honor every individual's unique contributions to the body of Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful diversity of Your creation. Help us to see each other as You see us, wonderfully made and uniquely equipped for Your purposes. Guide our churches to be places of true belonging, where all can serve according to their gifts and be valued for who they are. Give us the wisdom to create environments that respect and honor each person’s needs and strengths. May we always celebrate the diversity of Your body, working together in harmony and love. Amen.
