The Forward Day by Day Meditation for August 1, 2016

From Forward Day By Day

John 1:14 (NRSV) And the Word became flesh and lived among us.

Glory be! What an awesome, incredible event we read about in today’s gospel lesson. What a way to start the week. What a way to start the month. What a way to start a life! But do I understand this message? Do I live and breathe as if the Word is among us? Consider an interpretation of the passage in The Message by Eugene Peterson: “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood...” Wow!

If I were attending an athletic event to wave a sign for the TV and the crowd, John 3:16 wouldn’t be my top choice. Instead I would hold a sign for John 1:14. This Word that was in the very beginning, which was with God, which was God, which created all things, is now here in our midst as one of us. Pretty amazing. How can I not burst into praise for such a blessing as this?

Psalm 80, one of the psalms appointed for today, cries out repeatedly: “Restore us, O God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.” John’s prologue tells us that the psalmist’s prayers have been answered through the birth and life of Jesus. He is with us, among us, and the neighborhood—the world—will never be the same.
