The Daily Meditation for October 20, 2016

From Forward Day By Day
Written by Scott B. Hayashi

Ecclesiasticus 10:14-18 (NRSV) The Lord overthrows the thrones of rulers, and enthrones the lowly in their place. The Lord plucks up the roots of the nations, and plants the humble in their place. The Lord lays waste the lands of the nations, and destroys them to the foundations of the earth. He removes some of them and destroys them, and erases the memory of them from the earth. Pride was not created for human beings, or violent anger for those born of women.

Over and over again, the people of God—that’s you and me and everyone else who has ever lived—make messes out of perfection. And over and over again, God comes along with grace and mercy and turns our tears into song.

This passage from Ecclesiasticus echoes Hannah’s song in 1 Samuel and Mary’s song in Luke, and I suspect, it echoes the prayers of millions of souls who love this miraculous and merciful God, who count on grace and mercy to make things right when we mess them up, when we get in the way, and when we are unkind. Thanks be to God for these promises.
