Embracing Love's Debt
Owe no one anything, except to love one another.
Romans 13:8a
Introduction

At thirty years old, Xochitl embraced Christianity, but her newfound faith soon led her into a maze of questions. Each page of Scripture seemed to breed more inquiries, leaving her feeling lost in a sea of uncertainty. Seeking solace, she confided in a trusted friend, admitting her struggle to obey God's commands after an outburst at her husband that very morning.

"Stay committed to your Bible reading," her friend counseled, "and invite the Holy Spirit to guide you in loving others as Jesus loves you."

Even after over two decades of walking in faith as a child of God, Xochitl finds that this simple yet profound truth continues to guide her in embracing the three steps of His profound love cycle: Firstly, the apostle Paul's affirmation of love as central in the believer's life remains pivotal. Secondly, by persistently honoring the commandment to "love one another," followers of Christ uphold obedience, as "for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law" (Romans 13:8). Lastly, adherence to this law is encapsulated in the principle of "does no wrong to a neighbor" (v. 10).

Reflection

In the journey of faith, questions often arise, and doubts can sometimes cloud our minds. It's a journey marked by twists and turns, moments of clarity, and times of confusion. Xochitl, much like many of us, found herself grappling with numerous questions after dedicating her life to Jesus. But in the midst of her uncertainties, she encountered a profound truth encapsulated in Romans 13:8a.

"Owe no one anything, except to love one another."

This simple yet profound statement holds the key to understanding the essence of Christian living. It's a call to prioritize love above all else, to recognize that in loving one another, we fulfill the very essence of God's law. For when we love genuinely, we embody the heart of God Himself.

Xochitl's journey serves as a reminder that amidst our questions and uncertainties, there is a foundational truth that grounds us—love. Love is not just a mere sentiment; it's an action, a commitment, a debt we owe to one another. It's a debt that can never be fully repaid but one that we are called to continually fulfill.

As we navigate our own journey of faith, let us remember that love is the compass that guides us. It's the light that illuminates our path and the force that propels us forward. Let us embrace love as our highest calling and allow it to shape every aspect of our lives.

Conclusion

As we encounter the profound extent of God's love for us, exemplified most vividly through Christ's sacrifice on the cross, our natural response is one of gratitude. This thankful devotion to Jesus prompts us to express love towards others through our words, deeds, and attitudes. Authentic love emanates from the essence of the one true God, who embodies love itself (1 John 4:16, 19).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of love—a love that knows no bounds and transcends all understanding. Help us, Lord, to embrace this love fully and to extend it generously to those around us. May we be vessels of your love in a world that desperately needs it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
