John 13:34-35
34 [Jesus said,] “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:34-35, found in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, is part of the narrative of Jesus' final teachings to His disciples during the Last Supper. This section is significant as it contains one of Jesus' central commandments to His followers.

These verses highlight the fundamental Christian ethic of love. The commandment to love one another is not entirely new; what makes it new is the manner of love Jesus is referring to—“Just as I have loved you.” This sets a high standard for love among believers, as it calls them to emulate the selfless, sacrificial love Jesus demonstrated, ultimately exemplified in His crucifixion.

The phrase “Just as I have loved you” also implies a deep, personal knowledge and care for each other. Jesus’ love for His disciples was marked by understanding, patience, and a willingness to serve, even to the point of washing their feet earlier in this chapter. This level of love goes beyond mere tolerance or superficial kindness; it is active, intentional, and often costly.

Furthermore, verse 35 points to the evangelistic power of such love. The love that the disciples show one another is not just for the benefit of their community; it's a testimony to the world. This love is so distinctive that it serves as the hallmark of true discipleship. In a world where love is often conditional and self-serving, the sacrificial, unconditional love of Jesus’ followers stands out, drawing others to the faith.

In summary, John 13:34-35 captures the essence of Christian ethical teaching and the heart of Jesus’ message. It calls believers to a high standard of love – a love modeled after Jesus' own, marked by sacrifice, service, and a deep concern for others. This love is not only a central aspect of Christian life but also a powerful witness to the world of the transformative power of Jesus' teachings.
