Ready to Serve
Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work.
Titus 3:1
Introduction

Today's devotion takes inspiration from Titus 3:1 and a heartwarming story about Patrick, a man who felt a divine nudge to carry a five-dollar bill, leading to an unexpected opportunity to serve. This scripture and story intertwine to remind us of the significance of being prepared to do good at all times.

Reflection

Titus 3:1's message of being ready for service and obedient resonates deeply through Patrick's experience, showcasing the profound impact of responding to divine guidance in our daily lives. Usually not one to carry cash, Patrick felt an unexplainable impulse to take a five-dollar bill with him, a modest action that unknowingly set him up to meet a sudden need. This moment of providence unfolded in his school's lunchroom, where he discovered that a student, Scotty, needed exactly five dollars for lunch. Patrick's action, small yet significant, and spurred by a quiet but powerful intuition, became a poignant act of kindness, embodying the spirit of being prepared for good deeds as encouraged in Titus 3:1. This story illustrates how even the smallest of our actions, when aligned with a heart willing to serve, can evolve into impactful expressions of grace and joy.

In parallel, the book of Titus underscores the concept that our salvation is not a result of our own righteous acts (Titus 3:5), while emphasizing the significance of committing to good deeds (Titus 3:8, 14). In the hectic pace of life, where self-care can be challenging, we, as followers of Jesus, are nonetheless urged to be ready for acts of kindness. Rather than being discouraged by our limitations and deficiencies, we should concentrate on our abilities and the resources we do possess, with the support of God. This approach enables us not only to assist others in their moments of need but also to glorify God. This is in harmony with Jesus' teachings in Matthew 5:16, encouraging us to "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." Such a perspective motivates us to look beyond our circumstances, focusing instead on how we can positively impact the world around us.

Application

Like Patrick, we are often presented with opportunities to serve others in our daily lives. These moments might not always be grand or dramatic, but they hold immense value. The key lies in being attentive and responsive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Whether it's a small amount of money, a kind word, or a helping hand, our readiness to serve can make a profound difference in someone's life. Let us strive to be vigilant and prepared, keeping our hearts and minds open to the ways we can serve those around us.

Conclusion

Patrick's story, rooted in the wisdom of Titus 3:1, serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of our readiness to do good works. It's not about the grandeur of our actions but the love and obedience behind them. By staying alert to God's promptings and being prepared to act, we become instruments of His love and grace in the world.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word in Titus that guides us to be ready for every good work. Help us to be attentive to Your promptings, no matter how small they may seem. Give us the wisdom to recognize the opportunities to serve those around us and the courage to act on them. May our actions reflect Your love and grace, and may we bring glory to Your name in all that we do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
