Eyes of Faith
Elisha prayed: “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.”
2 Kings 6:17a
Introduction

In 2 Kings 6:17a, we encounter a profound moment where Elisha prays for his servant's eyes to be opened so that he may see the divine forces protecting them. This verse reads, "Then Elisha prayed: 'O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.'" This simple yet powerful request reveals the vast spiritual reality often hidden from our physical sight. Today, we reflect on the significance of this spiritual vision in our own lives.

Reflection

Elisha's servant felt fear and despair when he saw the city surrounded by an enemy army. His perspective was limited to the physical threat before him, overshadowing the divine presence continually at work. Elisha's prayer and the subsequent revelation to his servant demonstrate a profound spiritual truth: what we see with our eyes is not all there is. God's protection and power, though invisible, are ever-present.

The reality that the servant was allowed to see—a mountain full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha—serves as a metaphor for the divine intervention and support that we, too, can trust in. This account challenges us to consider how often our vision is constrained by our immediate circumstances and fears.

Application

Applying this scripture to our lives involves cultivating an 'Elisha-like' faith that trusts in God’s greater plan and protection, despite what might be immediately visible. We are encouraged to pray for spiritual sight to discern God's workings in our lives and to recognize that we are never alone or defenseless. This kind of vision empowers us to face challenges with confidence, knowing that our circumstances are enveloped in a greater spiritual reality.

Conclusion

The story of Elisha and his servant is a compelling invitation to view our situations through the lens of faith. By acknowledging the limitations of our physical sight and embracing a spiritual perspective, we open ourselves to the fullness of God’s presence and power. Our challenges may not disappear, but our understanding of them is transformed.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, just as Elisha prayed for his servant, I ask you to open my eyes. Help me to see beyond the immediate challenges and fears, to perceive the powerful ways you are at work around me. Grant me the courage to trust in your unseen help and to walk in faith, not in sight. Teach me to see every situation with eyes of faith, fully reliant on your divine presence and protection. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
