Finding Fellowship in Separation
Let us consider how we may spur one another on … not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing.
Hebrews 10:24–25 (NIV)
Reflection:

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dave and Carla faced challenges in their search for a church community. The health guidelines, which restricted many in-person activities, added to the difficulty. They deeply desired to connect with fellow believers in Jesus. Carla expressed her frustration in an email to Elisa, saying, "It's a hard time to find a church." Elisa, feeling a similar longing for her church family, responded, "It's a hard time to be the church." Their church adapted to the situation by distributing food in local neighborhoods, conducting online services, and offering support and prayers through phone calls. Elisa and her husband actively participated in these initiatives but still pondered how they could further embody the essence of their faith in this new reality.

As the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, our usual ways of gathering as a church were deeply disrupted. In the midst of physical distancing and lockdowns, the words of Hebrews 10:24–25 took on a new and profound resonance. This season of trial redefined our experience of fellowship and community, teaching us valuable lessons about the essence and resilience of the Church.

Adapting to New Forms of Gathering:

The pandemic compelled us to rethink how we meet together. Church buildings were temporarily closed, but the Church itself remained open, vibrant, and active. We transitioned to online services, virtual prayer meetings, and digital Bible studies. In these new modes of gathering, we continued to encourage one another in faith, proving that while our settings might change, our communal spirit and dedication do not waver.

Love and Good Deeds in Challenging Times:

Even as we faced personal challenges during the pandemic, these circumstances presented unique opportunities to live out our faith through acts of love and service. Many churches initiated outreach programs to support the vulnerable, offered emotional and spiritual support to those in isolation, and found creative ways to stay connected and care for their congregations. These actions highlighted the church's role as a beacon of hope and compassion in times of crisis.

Encouragement in Isolation:

The separation brought about by the pandemic heightened our need for encouragement. Hebrews 10:25 reminds us of the importance of uplifting each other, especially in difficult times. Phone calls, video chats, and even written letters became significant tools in maintaining our bonds of fellowship, demonstrating that our connections in Christ transcend physical barriers.

Application:

1. Embrace Flexibility in Fellowship: Recognize and value the various forms the Church can take. Be open to continuing some of the new practices developed during the pandemic, such as online gatherings, which can be a blessing to those unable to attend in person.

2. Continue Acts of Service: Let the spirit of service cultivated during the pandemic persist. Look for ongoing opportunities to demonstrate Christ’s love in your community.

3. Cultivate Encouragement: Persist in encouraging one another in faith. Whether through a simple message, a prayer, or a kind gesture, continue to strengthen the bonds of your church community.

Closing Prayer:

Gracious God, in a time of physical separation, You taught us the enduring power of Your Church. Help us to carry forward the lessons of fellowship we learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. May we continue to find innovative ways to gather, serve, and encourage each other in Your name. Amen.
