John 15:5, 8
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.… 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Verse 5 highlights the necessity of abiding in Jesus in order to be fruitful. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit by itself but must remain attached to the vine, so too must Christians remain connected to Jesus, the source of their spiritual life and strength. When we remain in Jesus and he in us, we are able to bear much fruit, which can be understood as good works, spiritual growth, and the fruit of the Spirit. On the other hand, if we do not remain in Jesus, we can do nothing of eternal value.

Verse 8 further explains the purpose of bearing fruit. When we bear much fruit, it brings glory to God the Father and shows that we are truly disciples of Jesus. The fruit we bear is a visible manifestation of our faith and a testament to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It also serves as a witness to others, drawing them to Christ.

In summary, these verses emphasize the importance of abiding in Jesus and the fruitfulness that results from a close relationship with him. They also remind us that our ultimate purpose in bearing fruit is to bring glory to God and to be witnesses of Jesus in the world.
