Beyond the Medal: Finding True Joy in Our Heavenly Identity
Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

Introduction
Kirsten's church community had known Kha for more than a year, during which he was a regular participant in their weekly small group sessions focused on exploring their faith. It was in one of these sessions that Kha nonchalantly mentioned his experience in the Olympics, a detail that almost went unnoticed by Kirsten. Upon realizing it, she was amazed to learn that she had been interacting with an Olympian, someone who had reached the stage of competing in a bronze medal match. The fact that Kha had not mentioned such a significant achievement earlier was surprising to her. However, for Kha, his achievements in sports, though noteworthy, were secondary to the things he held more dear: his family, his community, and his faith.
Reflection
Kha's journey as an athlete is a testament to dedication and skill, having reached the apex of sporting achievement by competing in an Olympic bronze medal match. The path to the Olympics is demanding, characterized by intense training, sacrifices, and a laser-focused commitment to physical excellence. For many, attaining this level of success represents the ultimate dream. Yet, Kha's story provides a more profound understanding. Despite his remarkable accomplishment, he did not let his athletic success define his identity. Instead, he placed greater value on his faith, his family, and his community. These were the elements of his life that held deeper, more lasting significance.
Yet, Kha’s story offers us a deeper insight. Despite his extraordinary achievement, Kha didn’t define himself solely by his athletic prowess or the accolades he received. Instead, he found his true identity in his faith, his family, and his community—the aspects of his life that resonated with eternal significance.
In Luke 10:20b, the phrase "rejoice that your names are written in heaven" serves as a powerful reminder of the profound truth that our true identity and joy lie beyond earthly achievements. This is further illustrated in Luke 10:1–23, where seventy-two disciples return from spreading God's kingdom's message and excitedly report to Jesus that "even the demons submit to us in your name" (verse 17). Jesus acknowledges their impressive power and protection but redirects their focus, emphasizing that their greatest cause for rejoicing should not be their worldly successes, but the eternal significance of having their "names written in heaven" (verse 20). This passage underscores the vital importance of valuing spiritual accomplishments over temporal ones.
In our own lives, we often chase after achievements and accolades, believing that they will give us identity and joy. We strive for good grades, acceptance into prestigious colleges, and recognition in our chosen fields. While there is nothing wrong with pursuing excellence and success, Luke 10:20b invites us to look beyond these temporal accomplishments.
Application
As we navigate the challenges and triumphs of our senior year, let us remember Kha’s example. Like him, we may achieve great things, but our true identity and joy are rooted in something much greater than earthly success. Our names are written in heaven, and we are loved and valued by God, regardless of our achievements or failures.
This realization frees us from the pressure of defining ourselves by worldly standards. It allows us to live with a sense of peace and purpose, knowing that our worth is not determined by our accomplishments but by our place in God’s eternal kingdom.
