Stewardship in the Light

For every wild animal of the forest is mine.
Psalm 50:10

Introduction

In a world where wealth and possessions are often seen as ultimate goals, Psalm 50:10 offers a profound perspective: "For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills." This verse serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty over all creation, including our material wealth. Inspired by this, let's reflect on the story of a CEO of a multibillion-dollar company who faced a pivotal question about ownership and stewardship.

Reflection

The profound contemplation of a multibillion-dollar corporation's CEO, "Am I an owner or a steward?" strikes a chord with many, signaling a deep exploration into the nature of stewardship. His thoughtful choice to transform his company ownership into a trust, coupled with his determination for his family to independently earn their keep, marks a pivotal change in mindset. This change mirrors the teachings of Psalm 50:10, which emphasizes God's supreme ownership over everything. The scripture not only acknowledges God's reign over creation but also urges us to view our belongings as entrusted duties, not merely personal properties. Driven by the aim to shield his descendants from the pitfalls of great wealth and guided by his belief that everything he possessed was ultimately God's, the CEO made a transformative decision. He ensured his family's engagement in meaningful labor and committed his wealth to support Christian ministries, thus truly living out the principles of stewardship as depicted in the Bible.

In Psalm 50:10, God's proclamation to His followers, "Every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills," serves as a reminder of His role as the Creator, who is neither obligated nor in need of anything from us. He explicitly states, "I will not take a bull from your house, nor goats out of your folds" (v. 9), signifying that He is the origin of all that we have and can do, including our ability to earn a livelihood. This psalm underscores the notion that God, due to His abundant generosity, is worthy of our genuine adoration and worship.

Application

How do we apply this understanding in our lives? Firstly, by acknowledging that our wealth, abilities, and resources are God's gifts. Secondly, by using what we have been given in a way that honors God. This could mean making business decisions that reflect Christian values, supporting charitable causes, or ensuring our families understand and practice the principle of stewardship.

Conclusion

The journey of the CEO stands as a compelling testament to the profound shift that occurs when we view ourselves as stewards rather than owners of our assets. This narrative not only prompts us to reassess our connection with material wealth but also echoes the essence of Psalm 50:10, reminding us that we are simply guardians of God's creation, as everything belongs to Him. Furthermore, it brings into focus the gracious nature of God, who, despite being the ultimate owner, chooses to give of Himself and establish relationships with those who seek Him. As Jesus exemplified through His life of service and sacrifice, mentioned in Mark 10:45, we are called to value the Giver more than the gifts. In doing so, and in dedicating what we have to His purpose, we discover a path to enduring joy and fulfillment in serving and honoring God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder in Psalm 50:10 that everything belongs to You. Help us to always remember that we are stewards of Your creation. Grant us the wisdom to use our resources in a way that honors You and serves Your purpose. Teach us to hold our possessions loosely and to use them for Your glory and the betterment of others. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
