Think about your relationship to God. What would you consider your greatest need? When you go to Him, what is the #1 thing you ask for, for yourself? For me, and I suspect for most people who have considered their relationship to God for very long, it is mercy. Because without mercy, we cannot know God.
From our actions, under the laws of God, we deserve to die; there is no doubt on the subject. All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God. And although God loves us and made us in His image — we are, after all, His children — our sinfulness makes Him angry and, in His wrath, He will destroy us. And not just some of us: when He gets really sick and tired of our sin, He will destroy entire populations, like Sodom and Gomorrah, or even the entire population of the earth (with a few exceptions) as He did in the time of Noah.
But God's love is powerful. If we take advantage of His mercy, made available to us through Christ, He will give us a way to be forgiven for our sins and for the sins of the world. God will look upon us, not as we deserve to be looked upon, but with a blind eye to everything we have done wrong. There is no sin so great that God cannot forgive it.
Mercy is the heart of Christianity. Where would we be without God's mercy? Probably dead and in hell, for without Christ, we might think that God would have wiped out the earth again.
Who can get this mercy? Anyone! But we have to change our hearts, confess our sins, trust in Christ and be born again, trying in every way to conform our lives to the life of Christ. This is the goal of the Christian life: To find God's infinite mercy, by walking ever more with Christ Jesus.
In Jesus,Lord God, direct my feet to your path that I may find my way to your mercy. Amen.
